I’m momentarily speechless as I spot Ayaan in the living room, engrossed in texting someone. I excuse myself and head towards him, my frustration evident.

“You hired a full-time bodyguard for me?” I inquire, marching towards him.

Ayaan raises his head, quickly glancing at me and then behind me, presumably at Trisha, who has followed me out.

“Trisha is just going to watch over you,” he explains.

I express my displeasure, “I don’t need more guards, Ayaan. You’ve already placed a tracker on me, and my father has sent guards to watch over me. Adding another guard to escort me everywhere is a bit excessive.”

“Yeah. But despite having the tracker and all your father’s guards, you still got abducted,” he counters. “That’s a bit excessive too, isn’t it?”

I roll my eyes, trying to make my point.

“Ayaan, I promise to be more careful from now on. I won’t go out alone or at odd hours without informing someone. And the person who abducted me, Tripathi, is already behind bars.”

“Tripathi is not your father’s only enemy,” he objects firmly. “And now that you’re also a part of the Shergill family, your potential adversaries may have doubled.”

I sigh, feeling disappointed. Ayaan grabs my waist and pulls me closer, his voice softening as he continues.

“Do it for me,” he urges. “Having a capable agent like Trisha with you at all times gives me one less thing to worry about. Besides, considering the tense situation right now, I don’t want to take any more risks, Meher. Please understand.”

I can’t argue further after hearing his explanation. I meet his softened gaze and nod in agreement.

“Okay,” I relent. “But who’s protecting my King?” I tease.

A playful smile tugs at his lips.

“Your King can take on an entire army of foes by himself, sweetheart. Never underestimate him. He’s morepowerfulthan the world knows.”

I giggle at his response. Among all his qualities, his unwavering confidence in himself is one of the things I love the most. He is super confident, and he never fails — and he never will.

CHAPTER 3

MEHER

In the car, Trisha occupies the front seat next to the driver while I am seated at the back, and my guards are following us in another vehicle. As we draw nearer to the Walia residence, my grip tightens on my handbag, which holds the proof of my father’s hidden action and deception that I received from a stranger last night.

I’m both nervous and anxious about the confrontation with Dad — nervous because if this evidence proves to be the truth, it will permanently alter my relationship with my father, and anxious because this single truth has the potential to shake the very foundation of the Walia family.

“Are you okay, Meher?” Trisha’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts.

I nod in response, hoping to shift my focus by conversing with her instead.

“Tell me something about yourself, Trisha. How long have you been working with Krish?”

Trisha adjusts in her seat to face me as she answers, “Three years.”

“And where were you working before that?”

“RAW,” she replies.

My jaw drops. She worked for RAW? Ayaan hired an ex-RAW agent to protect me?

“If you were in RAW, why did you quit that job?”

I sense a disheartened look on her face, which she quickly conceals with a cold expression again.

“I was on a classified mission, but things went south because of my error in judgement. Obviously, the RAW terminated my contract with them, and that’s that,” she shrugs.
