“What’s the matter?”

“I’m leaving for a while,” Scarlet admits softly.

I blink at her. “No!” It comes out an order, and I wince at my own demands.

She smiles. “I want to go home. I miss my home. Just for a while, I promise I’ll be back. But I couldn’t leave without saying goodbye.”

“Has something happened?” I ask. I’m mentally planning who to kill and how much to make it hurt.

Scarlet heaves a sigh. “My pack and I have decided to part ways, and I just need a change of scenery.”

Oh.

“You can stay with us.” I say the words and then wince.

She gives me a knowing smile. “Maybe let’s not give Darion and Lukas reasons to get all fired up again.”

I chuckle. “They’d let you stay if I asked.”

“I know. That’s the horror of it.” She stands up. “Look, Missy. You did amazing. They were almost all caught, with the evidence that they'll go to prison for a long time. The ring leaders, Judge Nelson Fields, well, they found enough evidence of past crimes to lock him up for several lifetimes. They got the police commissioner Gerry Somme. A lawyer Lyal Bridge. A real estate tycoon, Mathew Lake, and a politician, Brent Yates. They set this up when they were in their teens and it grew. The more power they got, the easier it was to hide. They are trying to find what packs and alphas are involved, but it’s just a matter of sifting through the evidence and waiting on DNA. The forensics alone in that basement.” Scarlet shudders. “Plus, people have been coming forward and telling their stories.”

I stare at her. The sheer magnitude of what my pack has achieved is right there for all to see. My chest tightens and tears threaten. I’m so damn proud of them.

“The Samuels Pack?”

“Yarek and Eli are in hospital in police custody. But the other pack members are talking. They have been working for the judge for the last twelve months, and the deal was that they wanted an omega. The judge was going to give you to them as payment.”

I swallow hard. “So they were telling the truth when they said I was bought and paid for. Mum, too.”

“It’s over now. Your pack is free. Darion swore to me he’d bring them down, and he has.”

I nod and smile, hugging her back when she carefully leans over me. We talk for an hour before she leaves.

I lay in the bed and think about all the information she just told me. My pack is free, but there’s something that’s been bothering me. Scraping at my temper, picking at my insecurities.

I haven’t seen them in three days.

Where are they?

Missy

The dress fits me like a glove, black with a tulle wrap from one shoulder to hip. The long skirt splits mid-thigh in a way that makes my legs look both long and bronze. Fortunately, Sven, who delivered the dress, also delivered a sexy pair of boots rather than any high heels.

I frown as I lace them up and stand up, raising an eyebrow as he holds open the door for me. He’s in the Raptore uniform of whatever the fuck you want to wear. In Sven’s case, it’s skin tight jeans and a casual shirt, with glasses that hides his eyes. I peek around the hospital and wonder if he knows how much attention he gathers.

“Where are we going?”

“They said you’d ask.” His deep, gravel voice might come across as cold or hard, but I see the flash of amusement in his eyes.

“What did they say you could say?” I tease.

“They said I could say nothing.” Sven nods to the doctor, who walks past and scans the open space with a practiced glare.

He hands me into the black limousine and gets in the front.

We drive, and while we do, I think. It’s been another two days. Five excruciating days without my pack. I don’t like it. I hate it. I feel their absence like a knife between my ribs. Hot and painful.
