“Tonight, we’re celebrating. Missy has agreed to be our victim. Oops, I mean omega. We are blessed beyond words.” The cheer rings out, and I wait until it dies down, raising my hand until there’s near silence. “The Raptore pack is off the market, and drinks are on us for the night. Spread it around.”

Now the cheer is deafening. I lean down, pull Missy up onto the table beside me, and before anyone can stop me, I smash our lips together.

It’s a mistake. It’s a huge fucking mistake.

She’s fire. She’s sweet. That scent I keep smelling is concentrated on her lips. An omega that tastes of sin and bad choices, one that tastes like mine.

She pulls back, and I stare at her in shock. She tastes like raspberries and vanilla. Her eyes are my favourite shade, her lips are softer than I’d dreamed. And she fit to me like a puzzle piece I didn’t know I was missing.

“That should have been our first kiss,” I say, almost as an afterthought. I sound confused.

She blinks quickly and then climbs down off the table while I watch in helpless denial.

Because the only thing worse than having an omega you don’t want is having one you do.

Missy

I keep touching my lips. Even now, lying on my rough, scratchy blankets, curled up beside a softly snoring Trin, I keep finding my mind going back to that kiss. It was ruthless, not a kiss like any I’ve seen, it was more like it was a melding, a claiming. Hard, aggressive, hot.

It was over too quickly.

But then he’d stared at me like that, and I don’t know what that look was. It almost looked like regret. What the fuck was that look? I go around and around until I’m so sick of the voice in my head I’m ready to ring him up and ask him.

I lick my lips, and I swear I can still taste him. Carnivals and dark nights. Fun and danger. But there was a childlike vulnerability after the kiss, like he’d seen something that scared him. Damn it. I turn the other way, but it’s no use. The sun will be up soon. I may as well get up, at least then I can stop thinking about him.

A knock has me pausing in the middle of towel-drying my hair. We never have visitors. I glance at my parents’ bedroom and consider my options. The knock comes again. With a curse, I rush to the door before it wakes my sisters.

I open it cautiously and find Seb leaning against the porch railing. His hair is still damp, lying in blond waves to his chin. He’s wearing a simple, black, chest-hugging t-shirt and jeans. He looks clean and huge and just…I want to throw myself into his arms. But it’s the scent of summer rain that makes me blink furiously, shocked and panicked, my body reacting to just the scent of him.

I fold my arms around myself to stop any such stupidity.

“Morning.” He rumbles and holds out a bag.

I peer up at him, lost for words. Flashes of last night go through my mind, his soft moan, the way his thighs tensed. I blink rapidly.

His lips curl into a smile, and I swear his eyes twinkle.

“Uh, sorry. Morning. Um…what are you doing here?” I look behind me like the answers are inside.

“It’s moving day.” Seb rumbles.

Now, I’m really confused. I hear a noise behind me and twist to see Trin sitting up, her feet tucked under her. Her body is tight with a wariness that I’m never going to be okay with.

“What do you mean moving day?” I ask and pull the door over so she can’t see.

“You wanted your family safe. We’re going to move them somewhere safe. It’s only fair.”

My jaw drops, and I stare at him. “Wait, but…”

“You have to move in with us to make sure this gives the appearance of a legitimate pack. So, they need to be somewhere safe so that you can have your mind at ease. We’ve rented a house, I paid the rent through the next twelve months. Security will monitor the property. I provided food and clothes with vouchers to last the next few months.”

“You can’t do that.” I manage to get out in a harsh whisper.

“It’s done, Omega. You signed the contract yesterday agreeing to this. You really need to read the fine print with Darion’s contracts.” Seb shrugs. “He’s just trying to take care of you.”

“I didn’t agree to this!” I almost shout.
