So I turn back to Darion and tell Lukas the truth via Darion.

“My parents are happy and have asked that I give them some distance to stabilize their lives. They thank me for my sacrifice and would like to point out the dangers that could occur should I continue to visit the family home.”

Darion’s dark look turns thunderous. “WHAT?”

I wince and glance at Lukas. The anger is gone, but now he’s pensive.

“Why didn’t you tell Darion when it happened?”

I hesitate, glancing at Darion. I swallow hard. “He was busy.”

Lukas stalks over to us and shoves Darion in the chest. “What were you so busy doing that our omega disappeared?”

I freeze and gape up at him. Our omega? I mean, that didn’t sound like meaningless contracts, that sounded possessive. Those words ring in my head over and over.

“Trin wanted to talk,” Darion snaps.

Lukas lets out a savage growl. “Fucking hell, not this bullshit again. I swear to fuck, Darion.”

“It's not like that. I was just helping her,” Darion protests, but it sounds weak. I don’t understand what’s going on here. I don’t even know that I want to.

Darion throws Lukas off of him. They stand there glaring at each other for several long moments; the tension growing until, finally, Darion turns and walks away.

Lukas snarls and runs both his hands over his head, then he throws himself down next to me and turns his face into my neck.

“Hey, I’m okay. I sat in a tree most of the day, and then Seb showed me your apartment. I’m sorry I didn’t message.”

“S’okay.”

“It’s not. I would never want to hurt you, Lukas.” It baffles me how true that statement is. I barely know this alpha.

He pulls away, just enough to turn my face, and then he seals his lips to mine. The kiss is heartbreaking.

He pulls away. “I was worried.”

“I promise I will try to call you if I do anything like that again.” And I mean it. I’ve never meant any promise more.

I smile, and when he kisses me again, I open my mouth. The taste of him, the sheer presence that Lukas has, is unrivaled by anyone, and his kiss is the same. Power, fun, mystery, anger, pain. Dark carnivals at midnight.

I pull away panting, and he buries his nose back in my neck.

A soft thud sounds faintly from behind us, the sound makes my stomach churn.I didn’t do anything wrong. Turning my head to look takes forever, and when I see, it’s worse than I could have imagined. Darion is frozen in the hallway, watching us with something akin to horror on his face. That expression makes my whole body break out in shivers.

I feel guilt for a moment and then remember the contract we signed and the fact I will be gone in a month and a half.

Our eyes lock across the space. He looks away first and disappears into his bedroom.

Lukas nuzzles my neck, and I stare past his shoulders. It’s just a bit of fun, right? It means nothing. I won’t let it. It’s just…nice to be wanted. It’s nice to have someone kiss me.

I gently disengage from Lukas and put some space between us. Fuck. Guilt is a familiar beast inside my chest.

Lukas shifts closer, but I stiffen before I can think better of it. I jerk my body around to stare at him. His eyes are wide with shock and hurt. It transforms before me like an invisible wall comes down between us. I can’t even guess at what he’s feeling. Lukas has just gone deep into himself. Where I can’t hurt him.

Fuck!

“Lukas-”

“Nah, don’t worry about it.”
