Darion glances at me, but he turns his body towards Madeline, away from me. “Maddy, I didn’t think you’d be back for a couple of months.”

Doubt swirls up inside me. Perhaps this is someone they want. She’s clearly a lovely omega. And someone they know well. I fight to keep my smile on my face while she runs her hands over his chest.

“I wanted to surprise you.” Madeline says in a husky voice. “Daddy is back from his trip, and he’s having a night in with his friends.”

“I’m surprised.” Darion laughs, plucks her hand off his chest, and kisses the back of her knuckles.

Lukas leans in close, wrapping me from behind, and I lean into him, despite the feeling of being frozen solid.

“How long have you been back?” Darion asks with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen on him.

“Oh, just a few weeks.” She pushes on his shoulder, flashing a flirty grin. “So, who is this?”

“Ah, this is our omega.”

I don’t have a name. I don’t even deserve him turning and looking at me. I feel sick.

Lukas hisses in my ear.

“You have an omega?” Madeline asks. Her eyes find my neck and scan, her relief is evident in her body relaxing. “No bites yet, naughty boy, you scared me for a moment.”

“Only a matter of time,” Seb grates out wrathfully. The tone he uses is the most aggressive I’ve ever heard him use.

“How is your dad these days?” Darion asks.

“Daddy? Oh, he’s doing well in the polls. He keeps saying he’s going to eradicate crime. I’m excited for the Gala. You got my invitations didn’t you?”

“But how is he going to do that?” Elsie leans across the table and asks, drawing all their attention.

“Oh, who cares, as long as they’re gone!” Gary chortles. “That end of town is an eyesore.”

“What about those stories of people disappearing?” Elsie argues.

“It’s just the gangs. Once we chase them out, they will fuck off and become someone else’s problem. Don’t worry about such insignificant issues.”

Elsie doesn’t look convinced, but she’s the only one who seems to care. I can’t believe I’m even hearing this. I want to be offended, but Darion shoots me a warning glare.

I wonder if when I’m gone I’ll read about them mating Madeline in the paper. I stare at Darion miserably, my scent growing sharper and more bitter as he continues to flirt with her. She keeps touching him. I can’t stand it. I’m not this jealous person. I don’t feel like this about people. But my family is gone, my sisters are gone, I don’t even own anything; I’m stuck with these alphas and…

I feel like I’m about to combust. My chest tightens, and I break into a cold sweat.

I turn and send Lukas a frantic, desperate look.

“Yes, that’s enough,” Lukas agrees.

He stands up and, without saying anything else, pulls me away. I’m almost blind to my emotions as he drags me out of the restaurant. A car pulls up, and he opens the door, carefully handing me in. A heavy, warm body lands next to me and scoops me into a familiar hug.

Summer rain.

“Seb?”

“I’m here.”

“I messed everything up.”

Seb holds me tighter while Lukas gets in the driver’s seat. “You didn’t mess anything up. Not even a little bit. Not even at all.”

I turn my face into him, unwilling and unable to voice the pain that’s tightening my chest. Unwilling to acknowledge that I might have feelings for these alphas, and the thought of them being not mine is agony.
