“No bonds. No scents. Nothing. She’s free game,” Yarek spits back. His eyes are wide and furious, and I wonder if this was hiding inside of him all his life.

“She belongs to Pack Raptore!” Darion snarls with so much menace that it lifts the hairs on the back of my neck.

Seb wraps an arm around me and draws me away, while Lukas thumps a baseball bat against his leg and stands beside Darion.

“Get the fuck out of here, Yarek, or I’ll rearrange your face,” Lukas says in a voice that makes me wince.

I watch as Yarek casts one more look at me.

“Remember what I said, Missy.”

I shudder and take a step towards Lukas. He turns so suddenly, I startle, but as soon as he stops in front of me, his eyes travel over me really slowly.

“You left me.”

“No, I needed to talk to my family.”

“You left me.” Lukas stresses the last word.

“No!” I say emphatically. “I needed to fix this stupidity with Trin, and I needed to know Elise and Muse were okay. I’ve been looking after them for so long, and I know I can’t do it anymore, but I need to know they are well. I needed to think, and to be honest, I just needed to stop feeling like I was fucking up everyone’s life for a few minutes. My entire life is gone! I’m just a thing now, just a thing that causes trouble for everyone! I don’t even know what I am anymore!” My shout echoes around the park.

“You’re not fucking up my life!” Lukas shouts back.

“You’re not a thing!” Seb snaps at the same time.

“You’re our omega,” Darion says so quietly I almost don’t catch it. I do a double take at the sorrow, the regret on his face.

I stare at him. “Darion-”

Lukas waves his hand, cutting me off. “Can do what he wants to do, what he needs to do, but I promise you, whatever you think he’s doing, that’s not it. We can’t tell you yet, but when we do, you’ll understand, and when you understand that, you’ll understand him.”

Lukas and I stare at each other.

“I fucked up, and I was really scared.” I admit. “Thank you, thank you all for coming for me.”

Lukas wraps me in his arms, holding me tightly. I shudder and tremble, imagining how close I came, but then I catch the scent of fire and look around. Darion stands there, his face looks like it’s carved from stone. All emotion is gone.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Give me the keys.”

I reluctantly hand him the keys and watch him stalk away from us.

“Come on, I want to show you something.” I say to Lukas and lead him through the park. Darion calls out to us, but we ignore him until we get to my favourite tree. The expanse of the base of this tree is enormous, but so is the canopy.

I climb up, and Lukas follows. I get to my spot and sit there. We’re surrounded by branches and green leaves, but we’re alone.

I stare at his arm, studying the swirls of colour and see a yellow arrow. “What do your tattoos mean?”

“A lot of things. The eye is to remind me that Seb always has my back. The arrows are for Darion, so that if I forget the way, it’s there to remind me he knows the path.”

I stare at them. “And the raven with the gravestone in its eye?” It’s beautiful and takes up a huge expanse of his forearm.

“It’s for my sister.”

“You have a sister?”
