“Why were you seeing Trin? She doesn’t need you, so why did you do all those things with her?”

“We’re friends. I’m her friend. She’s been sick. Isn’t that what we do?” He sounds so confused and lost. He sits on the coffee table and stares at me.

I consider it for a moment. Could it be that simple for Darion? Perhaps. Guilt for what they stole from her.

“Trin is not what’s important here. Missy is. How could she just leave like that, not giving us any notice? She’s an omega, it’s dangerous. They could have hurt her.”

He clenches his fists and jumps up and paces once more.

“Hey, Darion, if this were Madeline or Trin, would you be this upset?”

“Of course not-” Darion trails off and stares at me. “No, it’s not like that. Don’t try to think it is. We are responsible for her until our time is up. It’s got nothing to do with anything else.”

“Uh-huh.”

“We are obligated to look after her. We signed a contract!”

I wonder who he’s trying to convince.

“He was going to kiss her. Rape her. Bond her.” I say the words and watch as his hands clench and turn to fists.

“It’s never just a kiss,” Darion snarls. “No kissing. No bonds. If he touches her, I’ll skin him alive.” The pure malice in his tone leaves me with no illusions. This is a promise.

“You can’t ban her from kissing.” I say, egging him on.

“I fucking can.” He looks around wildly, then looks back at me in triumph. “We have a contract.”

“Darion, you need to back up a step and think about what you’ve done the last couple of days, and then consider what she’s done.”

He scowls at me, then snatches up a cushion and shreds it, leaving white fluff to spread across the room. “I know what I’ve done, I’m aware of everything I’ve done. I know you might think I’m stupid, but it’s not. It’s calculated for our success. Missy threatens all of it.”

I heave a sigh. “We don’t really need anymore success. We’ve done enough, we’ve saved so many lives.”

Darion growls at me. “We need to see this plan through. I want him ruined. We need to stop it completely.”

I close my eyes because Darion is right. He needed to be ruined. Destroyed.

“Darion, what do you really want in life? I mean, let’s imagine we achieve those things we’ve worked for…and then what?”

Darion glares at me. “I’ll think about after when we get there.”

“The problem is that she’s here now. If we continue on this path without adjusting, we run the risk of losing her altogether.”

Darion opens his mouth, and I know what he’s going to say before he speaks. I raise a hand to cut him off.

“We have a chance here for something few ever get.”

“What are you saying?” Darion asks warily.

“I’m suggesting you reexamine the plan and see if it can be altered and also fucking apologise to the omega before she skins you in your sleep.”

Darion walks away from me, turning to stare out the window at the world of green plants. His shoulders slump, and I cross over to stand beside him.

“I can’t let him continue to do this. He’s untouchable, taking kids off the street. No one listens, no one believes, and he just keeps getting away with it.”

I take Darion’s hand in mine, gripping it tightly. “We’re going to get him, D. We will. I promise.”

He turns to me with nightmares in his eyes. Agony on his face.
