It takes a moment, but then Lukas crashes into the room, his arms closing around me. He holds me tight, stroking my back, giving me something I didn’t know I needed and didn't have words to ask for.

“It’s done. We got out. We fought, and we got out, and we kept each other safe, and it’s over.”

I shudder and drop my nose to his shoulder and inhale deeply.

“It's…we’re so close. It’s all coming back.” I spit out hoarsely.

“And we’re going to finish it this time, and it will never happen again.” Lukas speaks urgently.

I hear a sound and turn enough to see Missy standing there. Her green eyes are curious but wary.

“Are you okay?”

I stare at her without words, feeling that fear flow like a river into Lukas and Seb. I can’t take my eyes off her. Seb makes the connection first and lets out a deep menacing growl, his arms closing around her. Lukas chokes, and his arms tighten around me.

“No!” He shouts.

I don’t say anything. What can I say?

“We won’t let it happen.” Sebastian growls.

Missy’s head tilts to the side, and her gaze travels from me to Lukas. She’s so beautiful. I don’t want to see her…the way we were. I couldn’t see her broken. She’s not all used up yet.

I clear my throat. “I think we have to talk.”

Missy murmurs something to Seb and makes a move to come into the room.

I make a sound that is half protest, half growl. “Not here. Let’s go home. Get some food. Talk. Yes, I think it’s time.” I say to myself.

Sebastian silently asks me if I’m sure. I give a short nod and gesture out of the room.

I barely notice getting through the office and sitting flopping onto our lounge. I just suddenly seem to be here. Missy is beside me, but that’s not enough. I shift to sit on the coffee table, my knees on each side of hers. I take her hands in mine and stare at her.

The words won’t come. They should, but they are stuck inside me.

“Whatever it is, it’s okay, Darion.” Missy says calmly.

I exhale with a harsh gust and lick my dry lips. “When I was sixteen, I disappeared.”

Missy’s hands tighten on mine.

“I went with a friend to their friend’s house, and I had a drink. There were a couple of people there. I don’t remember what happened. Not clearly. Not until I saw Lukas and Sebastian trying to fight off a group of men. It was so hard to move. I remember parts of my body hurting, but I didn’t know how I was hurt. I didn’t know the room I was in, and I had no idea how I got on this dirty mattress and why I wasn’t wearing clothes. There were men and women, I remember but nothing clearly.”

Missy is barely breathing. I know she can feel me shaking.

“Darion-” Her voice is so gentle, with so much compassion, I blink rapidly and cut her off before I end up losing what’s left of my composure.

“We got out, and we stayed together, protecting each other, not trusting anyone. Oma is the only one we let in and only because I’d known her before. She helped me deal with it. When I was 17, I realised this wasn’t an isolated event. It was still happening.”

My eyes find hers.

“It’s still happening.”

Her mouth parts. “What?”

“People are still being taken. Young, homeless, drug addicts, prostitutes, runaways. They are still going missing. It’s the same group.”

Missy’s already made the connection. “Trin?”
