Page 9 of I'll Be Waiting

I knew Amree and Ethan were a bit down that Nikolai had missed out on their weddings, but Nikolai was on FaceTime the entire time to witness Amree tying the knot, and he would be on FaceTime for this one, too.

“Okay, you ready?” Cam asked, shoving his wallet into his slacks.

I sighed. “Ready as I’ll ever be.” To be honest, I was nervous as hell to marry Ethan. We’d been together for four years, but I was still nervous that he would see me walking outside to the pavilion, freak out, and run.

I wasn’t sure if I would ever survive losing him.

The ride to the courthouse was filled with Jayden talking about life overseas. While I knew he missed us, he was at least enjoying himself out there, and I was happy about that. All I ever wanted for both of my best friends was to just be happy.

Ethan’s truck was parked near the pavilion. We’d come in yesterday to fill out our paperwork, and now, all that was left was to recite our vows.

“I think I’m going to puke,” I confessed.

Jay turned to look at me, understanding lighting up his gaze. “I know. But just take a deep breath, yeah? Ethan loves you, Draven. He waited an entire year just to hear you say those three words to him. He had to wait a year and a half more just to get you to agree to marry him. He’s stuck around. He’s proven over and over again that he wants this future with you.”

“When did you get so wise?” I asked, wishing my hands weren’t so fucking clammy. Ethan was going to be able to tell how nervous I was the moment he took one of my hands in his.

Jayden chuckled. “I just see the way he looks at you, Draven.”

I roughly cleared my throat before shoving open the backdoor of Cameron’s car and stepping out onto the pavement. I couldn’t handle anymore sentimental shit.

Ethan smiled at me and excused himself from the judge before descending the steps. We met halfway on the sidewalk, and immediately, Ethan grabbed my hand in his.

“Nervous?” he asked, stroking his thumb over the back of my hand.

I nodded. “I think I might vomit.”

Ethan wrapped me in a hug and rested his chin on the top of my head. I relaxed into him, my arms binding around his waist. “Just breathe. I love you. Focus on that. And once we get through today, I’ll take you home and fuck you stupid while the others get the mini-Christmas celebration ready.”

Since Jayden was home early, we were doing a mini Christmas thing with him. Cam had sucked me into taking goofy pictures and putting up decorations. Jayden and Nikolai would both be back after Christmas to spend New Year’s with us, but Cam wanted to do this with Jayden.

Honestly—and I’d never admit it—I did, too. I missed our yearly traditions together.

“Promise?” I croaked into his black dress shirt.

Ethan stroked his hand down my back. “I promise, boy.” He hooked his index finger under my chin and tilted my head back. Some of my anxiety eased when he pressed his lips to mine. “Let’s get hitched, baby.”

I squeezed his hand when he turned away to lead me to the pavilion. He paused, glancing over his shoulder at me, his hazel eyes bright.

“I love you,” I croaked. I didn’t say the words often, but he knew when I said them, I needed him especially more in that moment.

His eyes softened, and his hand tightened around mine, grounding me. “I love you, too, baby.”
