Page 44 of We End With Us

Nova may hold all the cards, but we’re still the goddamn Sinners and we’ll play nice for now. But there is no way Nova will be alone. Ever.

The ringing of the doorbell has us all jumping up, gripping the gun in the back of my pants ready, King’s posture is stoic as he wraps his hand around the handle, swinging the door open. We all stand ready to attack when a squeak comes from the other side.

Vicki stands with her hands up, her entire body shaking. “P-please, d-don't hurt me,” she stammers.

Dropping our stances, she relaxes slightly, eyeing us all with caution.

“Boys,” she says, swallowing just as Nova enters.

“Are you serious? Now you're going to hurt the only friend I have.” She slaps Bass’ arm since he’s the closest to her. His eyebrows furrow while he looks down at her and rubs his arm.

“I mean, no, but also we’re your friends,” he states.

“Guard dogs,” Vicki says, hiding her smile.

“Shadows,” we all say in unison.

“Come on, Vicki, ignore them. I asked for space but clearly, they don’t know what that word means,” Nova snaps, grabbing Vicki’s arm and pulling her behind her upstairs.

“I think it’s hot,” Vicki says, laughing while Nova stomps up the stairs telling her to, “Stop it.”

King eyes me before he heads back toward the kitchen. By the time I re-enter he’s on the laptop searching up Miller.

There isn’t a lot except the usual bullshit, he hasn’t been active on any of his social media accounts and I'm guessing since he’s laying low might factor in.

“Uh, guys,” Jordy says, coming into the kitchen, and holding a box addressed to Nova.

Fuck. When did that come? And why didn't any of us see it?

Reaching for it, I open the lid, placing it to the side. A bunch of red roses sits inside and under it is a note. Pulling it out I read it aloud so the guys can hear what it says.

We’ll be together soon, Nova.

I can’t wait to see you again.

“This fucker is getting game,” Bass snaps, grabbing the note to look it over.

“Do you think he’ll try something tomorrow?” Jordy asks.

Sighing, I run my hands through my hair because at this point anything is possible. Tomorrow is going to be hard for Nova even if she doesn't want to admit it, and even if she doesn’t want to say it out loud, she needs us more than ever.

“We make sure she’s safe. She doesn’t go anywhere, and I mean anywhere without one of us,” King demands. We all nod in agreement because this guy is getting closer and I would bet anything he’ll try to take Nova soon.

Lifting my hand, I knock on Nova’s door. It swings open and I’m rewarded with a pissed off Vicki.

“What do you want?” she says, raising an eyebrow at me.

“Just bringing you ladies some snacks,” I say, lifting a tray of cheeses and meats.

“Ooh, good I'm starving,” Vicki says, grabbing the tray from me.

Nova keeps silent facing forward, my brows pull together in concern as her eyes meet mine.

“Pup?” I say.

“Cass, please don’t,” she says, her voice coming out like a whimper.
