“What's up with you guys?” he says, looking between Cass and me.

“Nothing,” we say in unison.

“Whatever. I’m going to lay with our girl,” he says, heading upstairs.

Cass’ eyes connect with mine, giving me a half smile. I didn’t want to fight with my brother, we're family regardless of our blood.

“Bass know?” I ask, taking a seat beside him at the table. Shaking his head, he sighs before he looks toward me.

“He’s not handling it well.” He swallows, and I almost want to scoff, not sure he’s handling it at all. But when does Bass ever handle shit well?

The kid is unhinged.

“How’s the sleep?” Cass asks. This time I do scoff.

“Thought as much,” he says.

“You know you can always talk to me, right?” he tells me.

“I know, I'm just …” I stop, taking a deep breath.

“Yeah I get it,” Cass says.

“I never slept when my old man was home. Every night I was too afraid that would be the night.” His lip turns up slightly as if he’s thinking of a memory.

“Your old man was a bastard, Cass,” I remind him, he nods slowly.

“Yeah,” he breathes.

“Yours is no better.” Yeah, my old man is a real fucking piece of shit, but even with everything that happened he never laid a hand on me, not like Cass’ father. I don’t voice that out loud to Cass though.

“We’re fine, man, I was just pissed for a second.” I hold my hand up to him and he thumps his against it.

“Vicki contact Nova again?” I ask, knowing her best friend has been calling and texting nonstop to get hold of her. Cass nods, holding out Nova’s phone. There are a shit ton of texts from Vicki to Nova and over fifty voicemails.

“She’ll be knocking down our door soon.” I chuckle. Cass lets out an amused laugh.

“Yeah, maybe.”

Cass frowns, his forehead pinching.

“Do you think she’ll still love us after it all?” he questions.

I take a fortifying breath. “I fucking hope so,” I grit out, unable to keep the bark out of my voice. He scrubs a hand through his hair.

“Are you okay?” I ask him. Cass nods and lets out a sigh.

“I just want this to all be over,” he says, standing. Knowing my friend is hurting and unable to fix it I sit and stare at the wall, willing everything to be okay. Because I’m not sure what will happen if it’s not.

We knew she blamed herself, knew she’d been trying to push us away too.

Fuck that, we’re not accepting it. Nova is ours.

She’d finally drifted off again. Cass was afraid to leave her, but we couldn’t smother her. She’d hate us for it.

She’d finally contacted Vicki back, the girl was relentless, but I was glad Nova had a friend like her in her corner. After Miller, Nova was having a hard time. That fucker was lucky he was in hiding. I’d gladly wrap my hands around his throat and drain the life from him, slowly, enjoying every damn second.

Unable to keep the smile from my face as I pictured it.
