I can hear him moving in the other room, preparing what he needs.

Is he really just going to leave me with my brother and walk away?

Forget me—us?

Finally, I muster the courage and walk toward the room Jacob is in. He’s shoving guns, knives, and ammunition into a bag like he’s preparing for war.

The action triggers emotion within me and I suddenly feel sick.

“I need you to stay here. I'll send Bishop for you once I know it’s safe,” he tells me as he zips up the bag.

“No, I’m coming with you,” I snap.

“Savannah.”

“No, you’re not leaving me here and walking into hell when I know you won’t come back.” I swallow the lump building in my throat.

Tears prick the corners of my eyes and I hate him for doing this, for leaving me.

Lifting his hand, Jacob caresses my cheek. “I need you to do this for me, please, Savannah.”

“Kitten,” I whisper.

Jacob’s brows dip.

“I want you to call me kitten,” I tell him.

I need to hear it, even if it is the last time I do.

Sighing, he cups my face in the palm of his hands and leaning toward me, his lips brush mine, then he lifts his head listening before he shoves me down as he screams, “Get down.” Seconds later a blast comes, and the walls shatter around us.

Screaming, I cover my head as Jacob lays over me protecting me with his body. I feel the weight of him crushing me as rubble and plaster fly around us.

Gunfire rings around us and Jacob grabs my arm, tugging me up.

“Run, now, get out of here,” he shouts, pushing me toward the back exit.

“Now,” Jacob yells when I glance back refusing to leave him. Pulling a gun from behind his back he begins to shoot. He looks at me one last time urging me to do as he asks, and I make a run for it.

My legs feel heavy as I run, gunfire rings around me, the sound forcing my heart to beat rapidly.

I see the clearing of the woods and turn in that direction, but before I get two steps, arms wrap around me from behind.

“I got her.”

“No,” I scream, trying to break free of his hold.

“Jacob,” I yell for him. His face is the last thing I see before I’m thrown into the back seat of a car and it takes off leaving him and everything behind.

Savannah screamingmy name is the last thing I hear before Javier looks at me and throws a grenade toward me.

“Fuck,” I grunt before I race through the way they took Savannah just in time before an explosion rings out around me.

With my ears ringing and my vision slightly blurry, I try to stand, but a kick to my stomach as me barreling to the ground again.

“The almighty Jacob Kipling. You're not that fucking good.” Javier cackles as his foot lands on my stomach again.

“I’m going to enjoy killing you,” he says, wrapping his fingers around my hair, tugging my head back, and forcing me to look up at him. Grunting, I eye him as he leans down getting in my face, I smirk keeping his focus on me.
