Gabby touches my arm, “Way to lose a best friend, huh?”

My heart wrenches even more, and I frown. I don’t want to bother them with my problems, but since I can’t take this to Logan, they’re the only ones I can turn to.

“I don’t know what to do,” I shrug. “Being with Logan is one wonderful moment after another, but then I remember his only family is shunning him because of me and things get weird. And oh! Despite everything, I miss Jane so much!”

“That Jane is crazy,” Sophia says. “If I had a creep brother dating a girl like J, I’d be happy!”

Sophia ends up putting a smile on my face with her words. It’s nice to know you’re appreciated and supported. But it is also a reminder that I ruined the relationship of two siblings.

“I guess it’s time for you to decide, Joyce,” Gabby puts her hand over mine. “Who do you need the most in your life? Jane or Logan?”

I sigh, lost in thought. “I am not sure what to say. Choosing one over the other is like building a relationship over the destruction of another!”

“You and Jane were friends before him,” Sophia says, looking at me sideways.

“I know,” I say with sorrow. “But what I have with him is so… pure. And strong. And I don’t want it to end. But I don’t want to lose my friend either or make him suffer over losing his sister.”

“Tough choice,” Gabby says, then turns her attention back to the soap.

“Choice be damned!” Mom interjects. “You love them both, don’t you, Joy?”

“Yes,” I say. “But it doesn’t make much of a difference, does it?”

“It does!” She slaps her hand against her blankets. “Here’s what you are going to do. You are going to leave Jane alone for now.”

I blink at her, confused. “What?”

“Leave her alone!” she repeats. “She created the problem herself, and now she needs time to see what she has done, or sulk in it forever. Nothing you can say will change her mind at the moment. From what you said, she’s beyond pissed right now!”

I crack a tiny smile when she curses.

“After you decide to leave her alone, you are going to date this man for as long as you feel like it! And if she loves him, and you love him, and she loves you, and you love her, everything will fall into place again. Understood?” she asks.

It takes me a while to absorb her torrent of words, but mom, always wise, makes a fair point.

I don’t feel like crying anymore. Little by little, I recover from my tears, and with a few deep breaths. I’m brand new, feeling like I can face the whole world and come out as a winner.

“J, you’re awesome,” Sophia says, coming to hug me.

I almost feel like crying again, but then I don’t, and just kiss the top of her head with as much enthusiasm as I can muster.

Meanwhile, Gabby looks at her phone. “Come on, Sophia. It’s time to go!”

“No!” She squeezes me tight, but after one last hug, she lets me go and says goodbye to mom. “See you, mom!”

“See you, sweetie!” mom says, animated.

They are leaving early to avoid Nurse Roberts chasing them out, but another figure enters the room. It's that same tiny doctor I’ve been seeing around lately.

“We’re leaving!” Sophia says, hands defensive in the air.

“Please stay,” the doctor says, polite and neutral. “I have news about Mrs. Andrews.”

All eyes in the room widen, including mom’s. Sophia plops into the chair, while Gabby places one hand on her chest and the other in mom’s hand.

“Is it bad, doctor?” Mom asks with a soft, trembling voice.

The doctor smiles, “No! It’s good news!”
