“I’ve tried reaching out, but she’s not talking to me, remember?” I say in a fleeting voice.

“Aw, shucks. All because you’re dating her brother?”

We stop at the entrance to the parking lot.

“I understand why she takes it badly, but I wish she’d see how happy Logan is right now,” I say, dispirited.

“Aw, I’m glad you’re making each other happy!” Lylah says, “Jane never spoke a lot to me, but I liked her. Guess she didn’t feel the same about me.”

“She stopped talking to you too?” I ask, eyes wide.

“Haven’t heard from her since she graduated. All I know about her lately comes through you.” Lylah says, shrugging,

“Dang it,” I shake my head sorrowfully. “All the others who already graduated aren’t talking to me since I told Jane. Maybe she turned them against me.”

I bring a finger to my lips, deep in thought, but Lylah removes it. She looks me straight in the eye, and asks, “You really think so?”

Once again, I shake my head, regretting what has happened between Jane and I and for things to have gotten so bad between us.

I look at my phone to check the time, “It’s almost nine. I need to go. Have a great summer, Lylah!”

“You too, Joyce!”

She hugs me one last time, and then we part ways, but I have her phone number and I make a mental note to stay in touch and see her soon.

I get in my car and drive all the way to Brooklyn. I go as fast as I can while not getting a speeding ticket. Luckily, back on our street, I find my usual parking spot free and I’m able to walk in right in front of our building.

I rush upstairs, but when I get to the hallway, Sophia is already saying goodbye to Mrs. Sanderson, probably having seen my car pull in.

“Hey J,” Sophia greets me, then yawns loudly enough for Mrs. Sanderson to open her door again and give us a second look.

“Did you have dinner?” I ask while she opens our front door.

Sophia just nods, “Old Mrs. Sanderson is paid to keep me alive and fed, isn’t she?”

“Sophia!” I interject in a loud whisper. “Watch your mouth!”

The brat just giggles, devious and sly. We go in and she heads straight to her room, waving me goodnight. “I’ll crash. See you tomorrow.”

“Okay, I’ll try not to make much noise,” I assure her, and she nods.

But then she stops and turns around with a finger in the air and biting down on her lip.

“J, can I ask you something?” she says, uncertain.

“Sure!” I head for the kitchen, and she follows me, with her hands tucked behind her back.

“Will Logan really come here for lunch?” she finally asks, hands joined in front of her body.

“Sunday,” I say, burying my nose in the fridge looking for the dinner Gabby always leaves me. “Why?”

She squirms, her eyes looking all around her. “Our place is so small,” she says, shrinking to match her surroundings. “And poor.”

I get into a little giggle fit, but Sophia still has her lips pressed together and her eyes are rebuking me for laughing at her.

“Sophia, he has been here before,” I inform her, putting my plate of seafood pasta in the microwave.

“He has?” She takes a seat at the table, looking at me with wide eyes.
