To me, all there’s left is praying for us not to have problems anywhere else.

Chapter Twenty-Four

ALEX

Thedaycomestoan end, and Liv comes over to spend the night.

I receive her at the door, in front of a hyper kid running around and a nanny trying to get him ready to go out.

“Any special occasion today?” Liv asks, coming in.

“Lilly is just taking Harlan out to the movies today, so you know what that means…” I say, suggestive.

She smiles and kisses me, then takes me by the hand and walks me inside. “Have fun at the movies, Harlan!”

Liv seems eager to have me all for herself. She briefly kisses Harlan while passing him on the couch, then guides me straight to my bedroom, closing the door and attacking my lips right after.

“Hey…!” I say with a smile on my lips, “I was thinking we could eat something first.”

“I’m not hungry,” it’s not what her eyes say, though that’s a completely different type of hunger.

“Okay, but we need to relax a little first…” I say as I kiss her. “Let me run a bath for us.”

I head for the bathroom, and all the while I see her shadow seductively removing her clothes. Sighing contentedly, I reach the bathtub, close the drain, and let the water run. After a while, I add soap suds, watching as the water bubbles white with foam.

And from behind me, she comes, buck naked and smooth like silk. She holds my head to her bosom and kisses the top of my head, caresses my shoulders, and presses her torso against mine.

“You look tired…” she whispers to my ear.

“I am,” I nod. “And what about you? How was your day?”

Liv shakes her head, then comes sit at the edge of the tub with me. “It’s complicated.”

I raise an eyebrow, worried all of a sudden. “Howcomplicated?”

“Hmpf…” she bites down on her lip. “I think my colleague and I made a mistake, but now it’s too late to go back.”

The tub is halfway full, and she crawls inside, ready to embrace me from behind, while I start to take off my clothes, confused. “Tell me more.”

“I’m not sure how much I can tell you, I… Well, what I mean is I’m not sure how much I can tell you without looking like a hypocrite,” she says.

“Try me,” I incentivize her, stepping into the water to be closer.

She sighs, caressing my hair, wetting her palms, and rubbing my shoulders with hot water and suds. “I’ve been to Helding Heights today. Hell, I was there when I called you… That’s where I discovered that Big Teddy guy is after you.”

“And…?” I continue willing her to talk while receiving a nice massage on my shoulders.

“And?” Liv seems baffled. “I risked my life, Alex! If we weren’t with security, I am terrified to think what could have happened!”

“Shh, calm down…” I reach for her hand, doing my best to soothe her. “Thank goodness you had the security!”

“Yeah…” she sounds uneasy. “A car followed us out of there. Dennis, the security man, said those could be scouts checking on us.”

Okay, now I’m worried. There was never any direct attack on me, just rumors, but I took good measures to be careful even so. Now, Liv is under threat, and my blood seethes just with me thinking about it.

“Please don’t go there again,” I say, being hypocritical myself.

“Will you not go there again, either?” she asks, dubious of me.
