“Sounds like a plan.” I wink at her and get myself a towel.

Chapter Twenty-Five

LIV

Alexmakesgoodonhis promise, and we walk over to the police station after being driven by two security guards.

The inside of the station is a labyrinthine, intimidating, and hot to the point of suffocation. We're led to a young police officer to provide our statements. Sitting there side by side with Alex, I hold his hand tightly.

“Okay, what exactly happened?” the uniformed woman asks, a bit too dry for my tastes.

“She was chased out of Helding Heights by a car,” Alex says, with such calm, it angers me.

“So, you were the victim, Miss…?” the officer asks.

“Montgomery. Olivia Montgomery,” I say.

“Alright, then you tell me, Miss Montgomery,” she says, cutting Alex out of the conversation and looking pointedly at me.

I take a deep breath, and roll my eyes up, trying to recall the order of the events.

“I work for an investigative magazine, and my colleague and I were in Helding Heights doing interviews and taking pictures. We noticed there was some hesitation in talking about the subject we were asking about—”

“What was the subject?” the officer interrupts.

“Housing projects for low-wage families,” I say quickly, then get back to my story. “So, we noticed this reluctance, all because of a drug dealer named Big Teddy from the area who is not fond of change. As we talked to more people, this became even more evident. Then, as we prepared to leave, I noticed a car trailing us at a slow pace while we were still on foot. Once we got to the car, they lingered behind us for a good while, until our driver managed to lose them.”

“Do you remember any details about the car?” the officer asks as she types.

“Um…” I place my thumb over my lips. “It was white. I’m not sure about the model, but it was a classic type of car, wide, long, and full of curves.”

“Did you get the license plate?” the officer asks.

“Yes!” I say, digging through my purse. “Dennis memorized it, and Martha took note. It’s…”

I smooth out the piece of paper I brought and recite the digits to the lady behind the desk.

“Alright, that should be enough to identify the owners,” the officer says, pausing her typing to look at me again finally. “Now tell me, who was there with you?”

I hold up two fingers. “There was Dennis. He was our driver and security for the day, and there was Martha. She’s a reporter from the magazine.”

“Where can those two be found?” she asks me.

“At Brainstorm Media offices! I can give you the number!” I say, enthused.

“Okay, please tell me.” She pokes her tongue out slightly in concentration as she furiously types in my answers.

“Will this open an investigation?” Alex asks, full of concern in his voice.

“Actually, this will add to an open investigation on Big Teddy, Mister…?”

“Alex Winters,” he says.

“Mr. Winters!” she widens her eyes in recognition. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”

“Yes,” Alex says. “I would like to give a statement as well.”

I look at Alex, surprised, and even the officer leans forward, full of interest in what he has to say.
