“It’s just that none of them was very… interesting or exciting.”

It gave her tremendous satisfaction to hear him say that. “How come?”

He shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“Was your wife interesting and exciting?”

His handsome face lit up with the warmest smile she’d seen yet from him. It made her want to make him smile at her that way. “She was a firecracker.”

“How so?”

“She had a very big personality and an even bigger laugh. She was the most joyful, funny, outgoing, nurturing, caring person you’ll ever meet. Everyone loved her. I never knew what I might come home to. She was always holding a fundraiser for people in need on a moment’s notice or hosting a pasta dinner for one of the kids’ teams or whatever. I could barely keep up with her.”

“It must’ve been hard to lose someone like that.”

“Even though we knew it was coming, her death was a devastating blow.”

“Had she been sick for long?”

“Three years. The last one was terrible. You’d think it couldn’t get any worse, and then it would. Cancer is a nightmare.”

“I’m sorry you lost her so young.”

“It definitely changed the trajectory of my life. That’s for sure. I expected to grow old with Deb, and then she was gone, and I was left to figure out what the next stage would look like. That was a struggle. Still is at times.”

It was hard to imagine this cool, smart, urbane, successful, handsome man struggling over anything, but he’d clearly suffered over the loss of his beloved wife.

He turned on the sofa to face her and reached for her hand. “I find you interestingandexciting, Nicoletta, even if we didn’t meet-cute.”

She would soon be fifty-five years old and had never been swept off her feet or left breathless by a man until now.

“Funny,” he said with a chuckle, “but you don’t strike me as the speechless type.”

“I rarely am, but you’ve succeeded.”

“Is it possible you might find me interesting and exciting, too?”

“It’s more than possible.”

“I’d very much like to see where this might go. Would you?”

“I…” Normally, she’d be trying to find a way to let him down easy, but there was nothingnormalabout this man. “I believe I would.”

His smile dazzled her, giving her the same feeling she got when she looked directly at the sun. He took her hand and kissed the back of it. “I only have one request if we’re really going to give this a try.”

“What’s that?” she asked, sounding as breathless as she felt.

“I want you to make peace with your son.”

Detective Gigi Dominguezhad last worn her uniform at Skip Holland’s funeral. One of the best parts of being a detective was that she could wear her own clothes. She’d found the uniform tight and restricting and didn’t miss her days in Patrol when she’d had to wear it every day. She stood before the mirror in Cam’s bedroom and took a critical look to make sure everything was where it belonged.

A low whistle had her spinning around to find Cameron standing in the doorway, with his arms crossed and gaze fixed on her. “Hot asfuck.”

“Haha, sure. I’ve gotten flabby lately. I need to get back to the gym. The pants barely fit.”

In the mirror, she watched him come across the room until he stood behind her, hands on her ass. “Don’t say mean things about my favorite sexy cop. It annoys me.”

She smiled at him in the mirror.
