“Jesus. What’s he thinking?”

“I don’t know, but he just took my head off when I asked him that very question.”

“Do you think I should call him?”

“I wouldn’t. He’s loaded for bear right now. He said the whole world is coming for him, and Tom Forrester has never asked him for anything in all the years they’ve worked together.”

“I’m speechless.”

“Right there with you.”

“Let me know what Forrester has to say?”

“I will. Sorry to bother you on vacation.”

“Please, don’t worry about it. Of course I wanted to know about this.”

“You might check in with Gonzo. He’s beside himself.”

“I can only imagine. I’ll call him.”

“I’ll be back to you later.”

“Okay.”

Malone found street parking three blocks from the USA’s office and hoofed it, keeping his head down against a cold, brisk wind. Spring was taking her own sweet time showing up this year. The cherry blossoms were behind schedule, putting everyone on edge about whether a late frost might doom them. He’d rather think about things like cherry blossoms than wonder what in the actual fuck was happening with the Fortier case.

Inside the U.S. Attorney’s office, he was stopped by security.

He showed his badge.

“We’ll need you to surrender your weapon to proceed into the building, Captain,” the young security officer said.

Malone wanted to tell him where to go, but that wouldn’t help his mission. He turned over his weapon, emptied his pockets and walked through the metal detector. “Where can I find Forrester’s office?” He hadn’t been there in years and couldn’t recall.

“Third floor, to the left, the suite at the end of the hallway.”

“Thank you.”

While he waited for the elevator, Jake tried to calm his emotions so he could have a rational conversation with the man who prosecuted MPD cases. Under no circumstances could he lose his shit with Forrester.

He emerged from the elevator and followed the signs to Forrester’s office, where a young man sat outside the door.

“May I help you?” he asked.

Jake showed his badge. “Captain Jake Malone with the MPD to see Tom Forrester.”

“We don’t have you on his schedule.”

“That’s because I don’t have an appointment.”

“Mr. Forrester is in meetings all day today. I’m only to interrupt him for an emergency.”

“This is an emergency.”

“Can you please tell me what you consider an emergency?”

“Your boss has ordered us to release a murderer, and I want to know why. I’m not leaving here until I see him.”
