“Her attorney is a boob. If the case against her gets tossed, it won’t be by us.”

“This is all so crazy.”

“This might be the week that takes me right into retirement.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I mean it. I’m as fed up as I’ve ever been. The day we start releasing murderers is the day I’ve had enough of this shit.”

“Don’t do anything hasty. Whatever is going on, it’s not like Forrester to do something like this. Give him a minute to work it out. We can always detain Bryant again later.”

“If we can find him.”

“I’m so sorry, Cap, but please don’t bail on us when we need you most. It’s apt to get worse before it gets better.”

“That’s my fear.”

“Do you think it has something to do with Stahl?”

“I have no idea, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I’ve got to deal with the fallout of this disastrous decision. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Call if you need me. Any time.”

“Thanks.”

As he drove to HQ, he vowed to do everything they could to lock down the case against Tori Stevens. With Bryant or without him, they’d make sure she paid for Rachel Fortier’s murder.

Scotty Cappuano had counted downto Friday all week. Well, he always counted down to Friday, but this week had moved more slowly than most. He couldn’t wait to get to the beach and to see his parents. He knew it wasn’t cool for a fourteen-year-old to miss his parents when they were away for one short week, but he’d waited a long time for parents. He really, really loved his. They were the best, and he’d missed them this week.

After he got home from school, he quickly packed the rest of his stuff and Skippy’s. He put Skippy’s harness on her and grabbed the dog seat belt they’d ordered online to keep her safe in the car.

As if she knew there was about to be an adventure, she was super excited, dancing all around him and nearly making him trip a couple of times as he finished packing.

Reluctantly, he grabbed his backpack with homework that needed to be done before Monday. If he saved it all for Sunday night, he’d hate himself. If he ever grew up to be president, the first thing he’d do was outlaw math, followed by homework.

He checked the clock on his bedside table. The twins would be home any minute. “Let’s go downstairs, Skipster.”

The dog faithfully followed him everywhere he went, even into the bathroom, which amused him to no end. You knew that someone really loved you if they wanted to go to the bathroom with you. She’d even go into the shower with him if he’d let her, but that’s where he drew the line.

Having a dog was one of his favorite thingsever. Her smiling, happy face greeting him every morning from her spot next to him in bed was the best way to wake up, even if he had to go to school.

He also loved having a younger brother and sister.

As he headed for the stairs from the residence to the first floor, he ran into Eli coming the other way.

And he loved having a big brother.

“Going to meet the kids?” Eli asked.

“Yep. You?”

“Gotta do it while I can.”

“They love seeing you when they get home,” Scotty said.

“They love seeing you, too.”

Scotty had a bit of hero worship for Eli. He was the coolest guy ever, and Scotty got almost as excited as the twins did when their older brother was due home from college at Princeton.
