The list of people Nick trusted beyond a shadow of a doubt was short. Avery was one of them, as unlikely as that might’ve been at the outset of their relationship. Back then, Nick had thought about ways to have the pesky agent killed for daring to look at his wife with anything other than professional respect.

That seemed like a long time ago now that they’d all moved on. If anyone had the lowdown on what was happening with his mother, Avery would. He was the reason she’d been arrested in the first place. In a fit of rage over a horrific interview his mother had given, claiming all sorts of bogus insider info on Nick, Sam had asked Avery to look into her, certain Nicoletta was up to no good, as usual.

When Sam had finally told him about the investigation, his mother had been about to be arrested on prostitution and racketeering charges. Just what he’d needed after spending months trying to convince the American people to accept him as their unelected president.

He’d briefly been angry with Sam for keeping the investigation from him, but he’d forgiven her once he realized her heart had been in the right place, her focus on protecting him from being hurt any more by his mother.

Sam came out of the bedroom, carrying the long down jacket he’d bought her for when she attended Scotty’s hockey games. She called it the blanket coat. With her hair pulled back into a ponytail, he was able to fully appreciate her showstopping face. He never got tired of looking at the woman he loved with all his heart.

She caught him gazing at her. “Do I have toothpaste on my face or something?”

“Or something,” he said, smiling. His worries melted away when she came into the room. She was the only one who could relieve some of the intense burden, and he was thankful for her every minute of every day.

“What?”

He went to her, put his hands on her hips and peppered her face with soft kisses. “You have pretty all over you.”

“I bet they make a scrub for that.”

Chuckling, he said, “Don’t you dare scrub the pretty off your face. It’s my favorite face in the whole world.”

She looked up at him with her heart in her gorgeous eyes. “How lucky am I?”

“How lucky arewe?”

A knock on the door interrupted the moment.

Nick kissed her and went to answer it.

A huge bouquet of flowers greeted him.

“These just arrived from the White House,” Brant said, “along with meals for tomorrow.”

“Come on in,” Nick said, stepping aside so Brant and Eric could bring in the items.

“Flowers came with a card,” Brant said, handing it to Nick.

The card read,Happy anniversary to the best parents in the whole wide world. Thank you for our amazing family. Love you forever and ever, Scotty, Alden, Aubrey, Eli, Candace and Skippy.

“We’re told that Scotty organized the delivery with the White House flower shop,” Brant said.

“That’s amazing,” Nick said, sharing the card with Sam.

“Aw,” she said after reading it. “I love that. What a kid.”

“We need ten more minutes,” Brant said.

“That’s enough time to call home to thank him for the flowers,” Nick said.

“Let’s do it.” Sam put through the call, setting her phone to speaker. “Don’t tell me you’re still asleep,” she said when Scotty answered.

“Okay, I won’t.”

“It’s almost noon!” Sam said.

“I’m fourteen, and it’s Saturday, Mom. I need my rest.”

Glancing at Nick, Sam fanned her face the way she often did when Scotty called her by her favorite title. “Thank you for the flowers. They’re gorgeous. And the card made me teary.”
