“Other than helping you to avoid a lengthy prison sentence?”

“Yes, other than that. Are you hoping I’ll be so grateful that I’ll sleep with you?”

His laughter only added to the tingles attacking all her most sensitive places.

“What’s so funny?” she asked indignantly.

“You are. If I sleep with you, it’ll be because we both want that. I’ve never had to pay for sex, and I’m not about to start now.”

“Don’t worry,” she said on a bitter-sounding note. “I wouldn’t charge you if you get me out of trouble.”

“No quid pro quo, Nicoletta.”

“What is that?”

“I’ve already told you I don’t expect sex for legal work.”

“According to you, I don’t have any money. So how will I pay you for your legal work?”

“With the pleasure of your company.”

She shot him a skeptical look. “What does that mean?”

“I like you. You’re not only strikingly beautiful, but you’re interesting and entertaining. I find myself intrigued by you.”

“Intrigued. I see.”

“Do you? I want to help you. And in exchange for that help, I want to spend time with you.”

“What’s the catch?”

“No catch.”

“There’s always a catch.”

“Not this time.”

“You’ll pardon me for questioning your motives.”

“I understand you’re preconditioned to think the worst of people. I assure you that you have nothing to worry about where I’m concerned. I want only to get to know you better and see what happens from there—while keeping you out of prison and possibly helping you find a path back to your son.” After a pause, he said, “What do you think?”

“There’s really no catch?”

“None whatsoever.”

“You’re not angling to get in with the president, are you? Because that’s not going to happen through me.”

“Of course it would be a thrill to meet him, but my life will still be fine if that never happens.”

“I still don’t understand why you’d do all this for a perfect stranger.”

“You’re not a stranger anymore.” He took a step closer to her, leaving only a foot or so between them. “Are you?”

She held her breath, torn between wanting him to touch her and fearful for what would happen to her if he did. His rich, sexy scent had her wanting to lean in closer to him, but she held her ground, still suspicious of things that seemed too good to be true.

“I guess not,” she said in response to his question.

“If you follow my advice, I can probably get the charges pled down to misdemeanors with probation and community service.”
