“Every time you say that, something else becomes your problem.”

He thought about that for a second as he popped a grape into his mouth. “You’re right. I need to pass a law forbidding myself from ever saying that again.”

Sam loved to see him in such a lighthearted mood.

They shared the omelet as well as the chocolate croissants that’d been baked at the White House and finished off a bowl of fresh fruit.

“What were you thinking about when I came in?” he asked as they relaxed with their coffee.

“Nothing much.”

“You’re never thinking about nothing much. It’s always something big, so what gives?”

“I was thinking about you and us and how happy I am that I found you again after all those years I spent wondering what’d become of you.”

He winced. “I hate thinking about that. I get so mad at myself for not going to HQ to find you. I should’ve done that. That I didn’t is my biggest regret in life.”

“I think it all happened the way it was meant to. I had to go through what I did with Peter to appreciate this for the magnificent relationship it is.”

“That’s bullshit. You didn’t need him and his nonsense to know we have a good thing. We both knew that the night we first met.”

“Yes, we did, but I was so immature then. I probably would’ve screwed it up.”

“You always say that, and I always say I wouldn’t have let you.”

“Is part of being married having the same conversations over and over?”

“It’s fun to talk about the things that’ve happened.”

“Even the bad stuff?”

“All of it. I like to talk about everything that makes up our unique story. Why are you dwelling on the bad stuff?”

“I was thinking about Ang and Spence and what I’d do if that happened to me.”

“Don’t do that, babe. I’m right here, and nothing is going to happen.”

Sam barked out a laugh. “You say that as if you’re not the most coveted target on earth.”

“Who’s surrounded by the best security money can buy. I don’t want you to worry about me.”

“Can’t help it. I’m preconditioned to worry.”

“Cut that out.” He took her mug, put it on the tray and moved the tray to the floor. Then he turned on his side to face her. “I don’t like it when you worry about me.”

“I don’t like when you worry about me.”

“Maybe we should get ourselves a padded room where we can be safe and secure at all times.”

“We’d go stir-crazy in there, and so would the kids, because we’d have to take them with us.”

“True.” His lips pursed as he seemed to think about something. “I suppose the only alternative to the padded room is to live our lives and hope for the best.”

“I don’t like that alternative.”

“It’s all we’ve got, babe.” He leaned in to kiss her. “My goal is to live to be a hundred and ten and still be pestering you for nonstop sex.”

Sam laughed. “Won’t you be tired by then?”
