“I don’t like her.”

“What?” Sam asked, glancing at Nick, who seemed equally baffled. “Why?”

“He’s weird when she’s around.”

“You have to give her a chance, buddy,” Nick said. “Eli loves all of you.”

“We don’t want to share him with her,” Aubrey said.

“Guys…” Sam was truly astounded to hear them say these things. “Eli was going to get married eventually. You need to be nice to his wife. That will mean a lot to him.”

“I guess,” Alden said. “Can we go have ice cream now?”

“Sure, go ahead,” Nick said. “We’ll see you soon. Love you.”

“Love you, too,” they said as they ran off.

Scotty juggled the phone and then reappeared on the screen. “I wasn’t going to tell you about this situation until I see you, but they’ve been super chilly to Candace since they got home.”

“Oh jeez,” Nick said.

“We had a long talk about it last night after I read their books to them. They asked why he had to marry her. And they said he’s stupid when she’s around. I think, more than anything, they’re bent out of shape having to share him with anyone.”

“Has Eli noticed?”

“I think he senses something is off, but not specifically that it has to do with her.”

“Should we give him a heads-up?”

“I say no,” Scotty said. “Let’s deal with the twins and help them accept her. They’ve had a lot of change in a short amount of time. I’m not surprised they’re feeling weird about him getting married, because they’re no longer his sole focus.”

“When did you get so wise?” Sam asked, impressed and amazed by his insight.

“Duh. I’ve always been wise. You’re just now realizing it.”

“Haha, whatever you say, sport. But thank you for your advice, which we’ll follow.” Sam glanced at Nick, who nodded. “For now, anyway.”

“We’ll see how the weekend goes,” Nick added.

“I can’t wait to come there. This is the part of the year where school starts to seem like it’s never going to end.”

“The end will be here before we know it,” Nick said. “Keep your head down and your eyes on the prize of summer vacation.”

“If I must.”

“You must. You’re going to Harvard, right?”

Scotty’s snort of laughter was infectious. “Only cuz you’re the president.”

“You’ll get there on your own,” Nick said. “I have no doubt.”

“I have enough doubts for all of us.”

“You’ve got this, buddy,” Nick said. “And now I have to take my best girl on a very romantic date.”

Scotty made a face to let them know what he thought of that.

“Your day is coming, my friend,” Sam said. “Get all your homework done and sleep well. We love you.”
