He pulled the glasses from the cupboard and the wine bottle from the rack, pouring two glasses. He padded into the living room and followed Sam’s line of sight out the window behind the fireplace. “Everything okay?”

She smiled a half smile as she lifted her glass from his hand. Tapping her glass to his, she chuckled. “I thought I saw something move out there.” She looked him in the eye, “I guess my imagination is running wild these days.” He glanced out the window, but all he saw was darkness.

He motioned for her to sit and he quickly joined her. The quiet felt nice, but it was soon interrupted when his phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket, glanced at the screen and scrunched up his face as he looked at Sam.

“Cheryl,” he whispered.

He hit the button on his phone that sent it to voicemail. He looked at Sam and shrugged. “I haven’t spoken to her in more than four weeks. I told her then that I loved you with my whole heart and there was nothing for us to talk about. I honestly don’t know why she keeps calling.”

Sam sighed a small sigh. “I would have a hard time losing you, Gray. I get that she would want you. What I don’t get is that she broke up with you and married someone else. Now, all of a sudden, she’s back and won’t stop calling you. It’s so weird, after four years. You haven’t heard from her in all these years?”

He shook his head no. He didn’t understand it either.

Two days later, Sam was working from home, trying to write down dates and deadlines for some of the specific things she was responsible for at the office. She had logged on in the morning and had a conference call with all the attorneys to go over job responsibilities and organize how they were going to divvy up her job until they found someone. She was pulling together the information they had asked for and writing down the things she could think of, but she was starting to suffer from brain drain. She looked at the clock—ten-thirty. She called in their lunch order to a friend’s store in town which was ironically named, The Sandwich Shoppe. Today was the day they were eating lunch at Kinkaide & Associates and finalizing wedding plans. She ordered drinks, chips, and cookies to be delivered, as well as a few bowls of a couple different soups to go with their sandwiches. The food was to be delivered at twelve o’clock sharp.

She thought about the great evening they’d have the night before at Dani and Nick’s house, which was beautifully situated on Harmony Lake, for the fourth of July. The potluck meal was red-white-and-blue themed. They had a few drinks, and when darkness shrouded the trees, the lawn chairs came out, and the fireworks over the lake began. Gray sat in a chaise lounge and pulled her down between his legs to lean back against him and watch the show. Fabulous fireworks surrounded by family with all the kids—Gray’s and hers—joined them. The grandkids loved the fireworks and had some of their own to light off beforehand.

Ready to shower and primp before heading to the Kinkaide office, she softly padded down the hall, so she didn’t disturb Gray, but unable to keep herself from peeking in to look at her handsome future husband, she stopped in her tracks. He sat at his desk staring straight ahead.

She watched him for a moment, admiring his strong jaw and full head of hair—dark yet, but threaded with silver. As he continued to sit motionless, she couldn’t stop herself. “A penny for your thoughts.”

He blinked and turned his head toward her. Smiling he pushed himself back from his desk and patted his lap. She sat and lovingly wrapped her arms around his neck.

“What’s up, babe?”

He sighed heavily. “I just can’t figure out who on earth is trying to hurt you. I had hoped we would have figured this out by now. It’s worrying the shit out of me. The more time they have to learn our security and patterns, the more of a disadvantage we’re at. I’m stumped.”

She squeezed his neck and kissed him softly. “It’s not our place to figure it out. We’re supposed to do as we’re told and not test our security system,” she admonished. “You don’t have to save the world, Gray.”

He sat back and pulled her back with him. “The only world I’m trying to save is mine. Call me selfish, but I want to spend years with you, and we can’t do that if one of us isn’t here.”

She laid her head against his and sat quietly for a few moments. “This is nice, though, just being here with you.”

He sighed, “In a couple of weeks, we’ll be working together every day, and you can sit on my lap any time you want to.”

She sat back and captured his eyes with hers. “I can’t sit on your lap at the office!”

His voice grew husky, “Like hell, you can’t. I plan on spending a lot of time with you. I dream of laying you on my desk and licking you until you come and having sex with you on every surface in my office. I’ve thought of all kinds of fun activities for us there.”

“You know I have a brain, right? I am not just a body for you to slake your lust on.” She smiled.

He laughed at her and squeezed her tight. “I love your brain, but I love your body, too.”

He kissed her, moving his soft lips around her mouth, licking and sucking. He swirled his tongue in her mouth as he rubbed his thumb over her nipple. She moaned. He leaned forward and slid his arm under her legs and stood up with her in his arms.

Gray walked toward the door when she looked up at him. “What about Tank? He’ll know we’re having sex.”

“I don’t care. I am not going to stop making love to you because he’s around.”

Her face flashed a bright red.

“God, Sam, you’re so sweet. I love you.”

He kissed her again and continued walking down the hall toward the bedroom.

A couple of hours later, they were sitting in the conference room at Kinkaide Architects with the whole family. Jessie, Pam, and Caleb were there, too. The plans had come together nicely. The Remington was booked, the band was booked, and Eva and Ali had ordered a beautiful cake. They showed everyone pictures of the three-tier champagne colored cake with champagne and purple roses decorating the surface.
