“Okay, Dad, go ahead and say that again.”

“Mary and I went out to the garden this morning to water and check on the flowers. She wanted to cut a couple of the purple roses to bring with her today. The roses are damaged. They’ve been cut from the stems and strewn around. Someone damaged the roses for your wedding, Gray. We don’t know what happened. Who would do such a thing?”

Sam dropped into a chair—her hands shook, her breathing was erratic. She looked at Shane and Nancy; words wouldn’t form in her head.

Shane spoke up first. “Mr. Kinkaide, this is Shane from Haggerty Security, are you and Mrs. Kinkaide all right?”

“Yes, we’re fine.”

“Are you in the house?”

“Yes, we’re in the house.”

Shane nodded. “Good, I want you to go and lock all the doors and make sure all the windows are closed. Do that now and keep your phone with you so we can hear you, okay?”

“Okay.”

They could hear Harry get up and tell Mary to lock the front door. He would lock the back door, and once those were locked, they should check all the windows.

At the same time, Nancy got on her phone and called the office. She told them what was happening and that someone needed to head out to the Harrison Kinkaide house—right away. There was a good possibility that Cheryl had been there.

Shane whispered to Gray, “Don’t mention Cheryl’s name right now. We aren’t sure she isn’t listening. She may have done this knowing your parents would call you.”

He nodded and looked at Sam. Her face paled, and her eyes grew big as saucers. Tears glistened in her eyes. She shouldn't have baited Cheryl about the wedding and the flowers. They didn’t know she was that unstable, but still, they suspected she might have issues with them together. She felt terrible! Harry and Mary could have been hurt or worse.

When Harry finished with the doors and windows, he said, “We have the doors and windows all closed.”

“Okay, good. Now listen to me, Mr. Kinkaide, I want you and Mrs. Kinkaide to go to a room with a window that faces the driveway and lock yourselves in that room. Will you do that for me, please?”

“Yes, we will. What is this all about? Gray, are you okay? Is Sam okay?”

Gray looked at Shane, and he nodded. “Yes, Dad, we’re fine. It’s just a precaution.”

Shane spoke up. “Mr. Kinkaide, we have someone from our office stopping by your house to check it out. They‘ll be driving a black SUV, a Tahoe, and when they get out of the car, they’ll have the black Haggerty Security shirt on. He’ll knock on the door and will hold up ID so you can see it. Don’t open the door for anyone who doesn’t have the security ID, okay?”

“Yes, okay.”

They could hear hustling and moving around. “Okay, we’re in the den, and the door is locked.”

“Okay, good. We’ll stay on the phone with you until security gets there. The person coming to your house is …”

Shane looked over at Nancy, and she said, “Kent Logan.”

“Do you have a computer in the den, Mr. Kinkaide?”

Gray smiled at her. Mary loved her computer and her Internet. Gray had gotten her the laptop for her birthday this past year.

“Yes. Mary’s computer is in here.”

“Okay, Mrs. Kinkaide, I’m going to have our office email you a picture of Kent Logan, so you’ll know it’s him when he gets to your house. Don’t open the door for anyone who doesn’t look like him, okay?”

Gray wrote down Mary’s email address, and Nancy relayed it to the office over the phone.

A couple of minutes later they heard Mary. “Oh, he’s so handsome.”

Sam had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. Gray did laugh, but only because Harry sniped at her.

“He isn’t coming over to date you, Mary.”
