Her heart couldn’t take it. It beat so rapidly, and the heat that crawled up her body engulfed her. Her ears began ringing; her vision began to fade, then nothing.

38

She woke in a bed, the room unfamiliar and soft voices murmuring outside the room. The walls were painted a shade of light green that, for lack of a better term, was gross. She turned her head and saw David sleeping in a most uncomfortable looking chair. Wooden arms, his elbow on one, his handsome face propped up in his hand. He was slightly hunched over and looked extremely uncomfortable. She rolled to her side and watched him breathe. Then, the morning’s activities flooded back to her, and she closed her eyes.

“Hey.” His deep voice softly floated over her.

She opened her eyes to see his face—the only thing in her sight. His deep blue eyes bored into hers, his thick full lashes such a lovely frame for them. His full sexy lips tipped up in a smile. “How are you, beautiful?”

She raised up on her elbow, laying her head in her hand. “Where are we?”

“In an empty room at Home Again. You passed out. I got to play macho man and carry you from the room. I think a few women swooned, and I’m kind of a hero now.” His smile grew, but his eyes never wavered from hers.

“You’ve always been my hero. Do I have competition now?”

He leaned in and kissed her lips lightly. “Never.”

She slowly sat up, and he scooted to the edge of his chair. “So, how are you?”

“I’m okay. It was all just too much. And honestly, I’ll be driving to Madison in the next day or two to have a session with Dr. Troy until she can find someone for me in Harmony Lake.”

She swiped the hair from her head. “But, I’m relieved in a way. It answered so many questions I’d had.”

He stood and walked to the bed. Sitting with his back to the headboard, he scooted her back to him, her back to his chest, and his arms wrapped around her. She felt cocooned in love. Corny, but perfect.

“It’s certainly a mess all right. Are you going to go after Carleene for the money? Your inheritance?”

“I don’t know. What do you think I should do?”

He exhaled, kissed the top of her head and squeezed his arms tighter around her. “Sweetheart, whatever you want to do is fine with me. I make a good living. You’re doing okay working for Gray. We don’t need her tainted money. But, if you feel like you want it, after all its rightfully yours. Or, I suppose half yours.”

“I don’t have any proof.”

“Your father knew, and somewhere, though it would take some research, there are the divorce papers he started. That same attorney may well have known about your parentage. And, of course, there is the blood test proving Nicholas isn’t his son. And, your mother could offer some testimony too.”

“Ugh. My mother.” She wrapped her arms over his, enjoying the feel of his skin against hers. “I can’t think of her right now.”

“You don’t have to. You don’t have to make any decisions right now, except which sofa we’re keeping.”

She giggled. It felt good to giggle again. “Yours. I love it, and it’s the first place we made love after we found each other.”

“Good answer. That’s exactly what I was thinking.”

“Let’s go home, please.”

She sat forward and scooted to the edge of the bed. She turned her head to look into his handsome face. “Do you have fans to impress on the way out?”

He laughed out loud, and it was glorious. Their mood had been so dark for so long. His face transformed from the handsome classic face of a stud to one to behold. She was going to stare at him every minute she could for the rest of her life.

“No fans. But you may hear a little tittering here and there.”

She giggled as she stood, then held her hand out to him. He took her hand, scooted off the bed, wrapped his arms around her and kissed her firmly, holding her head in his hands.

“I love you, Kiera.”

She giggled. “I love you, too.”

“Did you want to say goodbye to your mom?”
