“Shoot!” Leilani shot to her feet and ran for the small closet, knowing nothing in it would suffice. She looked around the room, at a loss. Where could she get a dress on such short notice?

Her cell phone rang on the table where she’d left it.

She started to ignore it, then hurried to answer. If it was Angel, she’d tell him she couldn’t meet him for dinner.

The caller ID showed Kiana Williams, her friend and the resort manager.

Leilani answered. “Kiana, thank God.”

The other woman chuckled. “No one’s ever thanked God for me, but, hey, I’ll take it. I have a broker here who insists on speaking with you. Want me to tell him to take a hike?”

“Please,” Leilani said. “But call me back. I have an emergency you might be able to help me with.”

“Now, I’m intrigued,” she said. “I’ll be right back.” Her friend ended the call.

Leilani held the cell phone in front of her, willing it to ring again, praying Kiana could help her.

The cell phone barely rang when Leilani answered the call from Kiana.

“So, what’s your emergency?” Kiana asked. “Did a broker make it past security? Is one of our guests stalking you? Did a gecko take up residence in your suite?”

“No.” Leilani laughed. “It’s worse. I need a dress for dinner tonight.”

“A what?” Kiana asked.

“A dress.” Leilani sighed. “You remember the guys who went on the tour with me today?”

“The ones with the silver hair or the hot ones that could make a girl’s panties damp?”

“The hot ones,” Leilani said.

“Don’t tell me you have a date with all four of them,” Kiana said. “That’s just bragging and selfish if you ask me.”

“No. Just one.” Leilani drew in a deep breath to steady her breathing and slow her pulse. “He wants me to join him at the Kea Hana Restaurant.”

“Sweet,” Kiana said. “The man’s making an effort to impress.”

“We’re talking business,” Leilani said.

“Uh-huh.” Kiana chuckled. “What kind of business?”

“Pull your mind out of the gutter, girl,” Leilani shook her head, a smile tugging at her lips. Trust Kiana to think about sex. She hadn’t been on a date since taking the job as resort manager. Like Leilani, she’d been focused on the job, not her sex life. “His team is going to provide security for my tour business for the week. We’re going to go over the details.”

“Over steak and lobster?” Kiana clucked her tongue. “He’s not just talking business. The man’s into you. And why not? You’re one hot hoochie mama when you’re not wearing the company polo shirt.”

“That’s just it,” Leilani held the phone tightly. “I don’t have anything fancy enough to wear to the Kea Hana, and I don’t have time to go shopping. Help!”

“Oh, sweetie, that’s right. I doubt seriously the donations included cocktail dresses. But you know, I might be able to help you.”

“Oh, thank God,” Leilani sank into a chair. “Surely, you have a dress I could borrow.”

“Actually,” Kiana dragged out the word, “I doubt any of my dresses would fit you. I’m a couple sizes larger than you and almost a foot taller.”

Leilani sighed. “It sucks to be short.”

“It sucks being tall, except when you have to go toe-to-toe in an argument with a man.” Kiana chuckled. “But don’t worry. I think we can find something in our lost and found room. You’d be surprised with the things guests leave behind. Come up to the lodge. I’ll show you.”

“Do you have time? I don’t want to take you away from your work,” Leilani said.
