A chill rippled down the back of Leilani’s neck. “That’s not reassuring.”

“And that’s why I’ve now become your shadow. Where you go, I go.” He tipped her chin up. “Starting tonight, I’ll camp outside your door.”

“I have a couch in my suite,” she offered, her voice breathless, butterflies battering the inside of her belly.

His lips twitched. “Only if you’re okay with a strange man sleeping in the same suite with you.”

She nodded, her thoughts zooming ahead to the night and all the possibilities. “Do you really think someone would try to attack me here at the resort?”

“Did you think someone would attack you on the boat?” he countered.

Her gut clenched. “No.”

CHAPTER9

Still holding Leilani’s hands,Angel captured and held her gaze. “Twenty-four-seven, Leilani. I can’t protect you if I’m not with you twenty-four-seven.”

Leilani’s pulse leaped. “Even my bridesmaids’ dress fitting?”

His lips twitched. “Even your fitting.” His nose wrinkled. “We both need to shower before we do anything.”

Leilani’s instinct was to offer to let him shower with her. She opened her mouth to say that, but he beat her to the punch.

“I’m going to leave you for just a few minutes. While I’m gone, I want you to stay in your suite with the door locked.” He let go of one of her hands. “Your key?”

She fished in her pocket for the key and handed it to him. Was she insane, giving him the key to her room? A stranger she’d only known a little more than a day.

He waved the key over the lock. When the light turned green, he opened the door, stepped inside, pulled her through and closed the door behind her. “Let me clear the suite before you go any further.”

She frowned. “Is that necessary? The door locks when I leave.”

“Humor me?” he said.

Leilani waved a hand at the interior. “Knock yourself out.”

As he moved about the suite, she cringed, wishing she’d taken a little more time to straighten and organize the items she’d accumulated over the past few months. When he stepped into the bedroom, she tried to visualize how she’d left it that morning. Had she made the bed and picked up the dirty laundry?

She made a note to herself to make more of an effort to tidy up before leaving her place each day. She never knew when she might entertain a handsome male guest.

Leilani chuckled. She hadn’t entertained a male guest in a very long time. Why would she have thought it would happen today?

“All clear.” Angel emerged from her bedroom. When he saw her, he frowned. “What’s so funny?”

She smiled. “Nothing. It just seems like a bit of overkill.”

“I might have agreed with you yesterday,” he said. “But the attack today was violent and potentially deadly. If the person who was driving that boat had the balls to attack a boatload of people, he might consider one lone female to be easy pickings.”

Leilani shivered. “If you’re trying to scare me, you’re doing a good job.”

“Good.” He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “Better scared than dead.”

Sparks of electricity ignited her nerves where his fingers brushed her cheek and ear.

“You’d better hurry through the shower. I’ll hit the shower in my room, grab my things and be back before you’re done.” Angel held up her key. “Mind if I hold onto this to let myself in if you’re still in the bathroom?”

She shook her head. “Please do.”And join me in the shower, she wanted to add but bit down on her tongue to keep from blurting it out.

He stared at her a moment longer as if he wanted to say something else but must have thought better of it. He stepped around her and hurried out the door, closing it firmly behind him.
