He released her and stepped away. “Two minutes.”

“I can be ready in one,” she said, her voice husky with desire. Leilani dove into the bathroom, grabbed her bikini from where she’d hung it on the shower rod to dry and quickly pulled it on.

She slid her feet into a pair of flip-flops, grabbed a towel and hurried out into the living area. “Ready?”

Angel stood by the door, wearing his swim trunks and flip-flops. He held up the key to the door and a condom packet. “Ready.”

He pulled the door open and stepped out first, looking all around.

Leilani waited inside until he waved her through.

She pulled the door shut behind them, hooked her hand through the crook of Angel’s elbow and led him down the path to the beach.

Lights shone around the edges of the curtains of the other suites, but no one came out.

It wasn’t all that late, but the families were in for the night, probably herding their children through baths to get to bed before nine o’clock.

Once they passed the last building, Leilani and Angel had the path to themselves. Bright starlight lit the sky, making it easy to find their way down to the water.

Leilani looked from one end of the stretch of beach to the other. Nothing moved, and she didn’t see any shadowy figures lying in the sand. They had the beach all to themselves.

She reached to untie the strap tied behind her back. When she raised her hands to the bow at the base of her neck, she looked around again. Though she didn’t see anyone, a creepy feeling washed over her as if someone was watching her.

Leilani retied the strap at the middle of her back.

Angel stood with his hands on the waistband of his swim trunks, a frown denting his brow. “I never turn down an opportunity to skinny dip,” he said. “But I have a funny feeling about this.”

“You, too?” Leilani asked, her gaze also sweeping the beach for any sign of trouble. “Would it help to walk it to see if we’re missing something or someone?”

“Yeah, let’s do that.” He held out his arm, and Leilani hooked her elbow around his. Then, they set off at a brisk pace, walking along the shore.

Besides the occasional clump of lava rock and a couple of palms, the beach was empty.

Leilani turned toward the stand of palms they’d passed through on the path down from the buildings. The area beneath them was completely cloaked in shadows. Short of searching through the small forest, they had no way of knowing if someone was there, watching them.

With a sigh, Leilani turned to Angel, her lips twisting into a grimace.

“Not feeling it, are you?” he said.

She shook her head. “I can’t shake the feeling we’re being watched.”

“Same.” He stared at the shadows beneath the palms. “Although I don’t give a rat’s ass if anyone gets an eyeful of my fine physique, I don’t want to expose you to some peeping Tom who’s lurking in the dark, hoping to get an eyeful of a pretty, naked female.”

“I want a raincheck for another night.” Leilani wrapped her arms around Angel’s middle and rested her cheek against his chest. She could hear the reassuring beat of his heart. For a long moment, she stood in his arms, not caring if someone say them holding each other in the moonlight.

Unlike Angel, Leilani had no desire to strip naked in front of a peeping Tom.

They might not swim naked that night, but Leilani vowed to do it another night when she didn’t have that nagging tug of paranoia.

She lifted her head, stared up into Angel’s gaze and smiled. “At least we had a lovely walk on the beach.”

“Yes, we did.” He brushed a strand of her hair back behind her ear. “We should call it a night and get some rest. Are you going out with Windsong II tomorrow?”

Leilani shrugged. “I’ll be there in the morning and make my decision then. I fully expect we’ll lose some of our reservations. Word gets out fast around the island. We might even lose some of our deckhands since we’re down one boat and might have to shut down operations until we can stop the attacks. In that case, I’ll need to be there to fill in.”

Back at her suite, Angel tapped the key card over the look and pushed the door open. “Let me check.”

Leilani didn’t argue. She waited patiently outside the suite while Angel searched her apartment.
