Another explosion followed shortly after.

“I think we’re far enough away,” Teller said. “Let’s get to the car.”

At the car, Angel dropped to the ground, pulled Leilani into his arms and rocked her, his body shaking. “Babe, I think I lost ten years off my life.”

Leilani stared up at him. “You and me both.” Her words were breathy and slurred.

“How did she get you here?”

“Drugged.” Leilani closed her eyes. “Can we go home now?”

“The fire department and an ambulance are on the way,” Dev reported.

Reid laid Alyssa’s body on the ground.

Leilani’s head tilted toward the woman. “She thought that if I died, Makai would inherit the land as my only living relative. She didn’t know.” Leilani looked up at Angel. “If I die with no direct descendants, the land goes to the state of Hawaii.”

Angel hugged her close. “I’m glad you didn’t die. You mean too much to me.”

Her lips curled in a soft smile. “I wasn’t going to die. Especially not in a fire.” She lay quietly for a moment. “Not when I’m one hundred percent, crazy in love with you, and I haven’t had the chance to tell you. If you’re not one hundred percent, that’s okay. I can wait. But I wanted you to know in case it makes a difference.”

“Babe, it makes a difference. I don’t want to go another day without telling you how I feel.”

“And how is that?” she asked softly.

He laid a hand over his heart. “One hundred percent.”

EPILOGUE

Two weekslater

Kiana hugged Leilani’s neck. “I can’t believe you’re moving out. I got used to having you close.”

Leilani smiled. “I’m going to miss having coffee with you in the morning. But I’ll make sure I come by once a week on my way to the dock. Or I’ll do the land tour and come early so we can catch up on gossip. Either way, I’m not going that far away. Just up in the hills. Angel’s boss has connections with the owners of the Parkman Ranch on the Big Island. They have a wealthy friend who keeps a house here on Maui and is rarely here. He offered to let Angel and I live there until we can rebuild in Lahaina. I can even have Makai move in with me when he’s ready.”

“I’m glad to hear that,” Kiana said. “I was worried about how he’s been since Alyssa’s death. He doesn’t have anyone to help him when he’s released from rehab.”

“I asked him if he wanted to move in now. We could hire someone to help him until he can help himself.”

Kiana’s brow dipped. “He didn’t jump at the chance to leave the rehab facility?”

Leilani shook her head. “That shocked me, too, until I saw his physical therapist. She’s hot and into surfers but doesn’t surf.”

“Perfect,” Kiana sighed. “I have to admit, I’m jealous.” She shot a glance toward Angel as he loaded Leilani’s belongings into the car he’d purchased.

Leilani’s eyebrows rose. “Kiana. Seriously. Do you have a thing for my man?”

Kiana laughed. “No. I’m not in the market for a relationship. I only pick the bad ones. It’s better if I don’t pick one at all.” She gave her friend a crooked smile. “I’m jealous you found love. I’d begun to think it doesn’t exist.”

“You’ll find the right one for you,” Leilani said, “when you least expect it.”

“Oh, please. I like being single. I don’t have to answer to anyone, I don’t have to worry that my significant other is stealing my money, and I can date whoever I want, whenever I want.”

Dev appeared, carrying a box full of Leilani’s computer parts and cords. “Did I hear you want to date? I’m single and available. I’d go out with you.”

Kiana rolled her eyes. “My standards might be too high for you.”

Dev chuckled. “Try me.”
