“Son of a gun,” he breathed.

“Officer, the highway out to Silverwood is still shut down.”

“Yeah, I know Mary Lou. That’s why I’m going to escort them.”

“Pete—”

“Doc Graham said the Carlisle’s have guests staying on the property this weekend. They need to get back.”

“It’s not safe, officer.”

“We’ll see.”

“Officer ….”

The scanner issued another burst of static and then went dead.

“This is the best news we’ve had all day. Once the police officer shows up, we can turn this mess over to the local authorities,” Sasha said. The tightness in her chest loosened and her jaw relaxed. She felt ten pounds lighter.

Hank and Chris exchanged a look. Then Chris said, “I wouldn’t get your hopes up.”

“Why not?”

“Have you looked outside lately?”

“No. Why?”

Hank led her to the big bowed window in the sitting room. The exterior floodlights were on, revealing a solid wall of white. She couldn’t make out the driveway or the trees or the other structures on the property. She saw nothing but a sea of white.

Crestfallen, her heart dropped and her shoulders sagged. “Oh.”

“Don’t lose faith,” Chris ordered, patting her on the shoulder.

“Sorry,” Hank said with a rueful smile.

She pulled herself together. “Miracles happen.”

“That’s the spirit,” Chris encouraged.

Hank drew his eyebrows together, “Where’s your husband?”

“He took Paul back to the parlor. The rest of the men have started a poker game, and Connelly’s worried about Paul playing cards for money. I get his concern—the last thing we need is more drama. But I don’t see how we can stop him—especially if he has a gambling addiction.”

Hank muttered. “He’s an adult.”

“I know. But we should try. Find something else for them to do. A distraction.”

“Do I look like a cruise director?” Hank shot back.

“Settle down. I realize entertaining a group of strangers isn’t in your skill set. But it is in someone’s.” She raised her eyebrows.

After a moment, Chris snapped his fingers. “Maisy. If anyone can distract them from their poker game, she can.”

Sasha smiled. “Exactly.”

Chris patted Hank’s arm. “Come on, big guy. Let’s go find the cruise director.”
