“There are a lot of rooms. It’s awesome,” Sasha said with glee. “But, yeah, there’s a pile of bags in whatever that room is.”

“I got to thinking—”

“Uh-oh,” Leo interjected.

Maisy tossed her hair and gave him a look before going on. “Realistically, we’re probably all here for the night. It’s getting late. And whether Aroostine and Carl find that police officer and bring him back or not, people have to get some sleep. So I thought we could all pick rooms. I talked to the reunion folks. Everyone understands we’re going to have to double up, maybe triple up. But that’s better than sitting up all night staring at each other, wondering who the murderer is.”

“You have a point,” Sasha said.

As if to prove that point, Maisy yawned delicately, covering her mouth with her hand. “This gal needs her beauty sleep.”

“It’s not the worst idea,” Leo allowed.

“Gee, thanks.”

“I didn’t mean it that way.”

She waved an airy hand. “Whatever. I thought before we invite everyone up to pick rooms, we could have a preview and get the best ones for ourselves.”

Sasha smiled. “I like the way you think.”

Leo shook his head. “You two.”

“And don’t worry. We’ve all agreed that you and Leo get a room to yourselves even if it means some people end up four to a room.”

“That’s not necessary,” Sasha said.

“It’s your anniversary!”

“Tomorrowis our anniversary,” Sasha corrected her. “And I have every confidence that this will all be in our rearview by then. You’ll see—it’ll be a fabulous tenth anniversary party.”

“That’s one of the things I love about you. Your indomitable spirit,” Leo said, leaning over to kiss her.

From downstairs, Hank’s voice boomed. “Leo,” he bellowed. “Are you coming down or what?”

“Oh, yeah.” Maisy grinned sheepishly. “I forgot. Hank wants to talk to you.”

CHAPTER26

Hank stood at the base of the stairs, frowning up at Leo. Leo reached the first floor and frowned back.

“What happened? Please don’t tell me there’s another dead body.”

“No, no, this is a positive development.”

“About time.”

“No kidding.”

Leo nodded toward Bodhi, who was pulling on his boots and coat at the door. “Where’s he going?”

“A message just came over the scanner. Officer Duncan called Mary Lou, the dispatcher, to let her—but also us—know that Aroostine and Carl found them in the woods. They filled the Carlisles, the police office, and the doctor in on everything happening here. He called for backup. But—” Hank took a breath.

“Oh, let me guess. It could be a long wait because of the weather.”

“Bingo.”

“It is good news, though.” The tightness in Leo’s chest eased for the first time in hours and his headache lessened ever so slightly.
