Suddenly, she sits up. “Shit, what time is it?”

“Six—

“Oh my god, you have to go!” She climbs off of me.

“What? Why?”

“Owen will be up soon.”

I frown. “So?”

She grabs my clothes and chucks them at me. “I don’t have overnight guests, Everett, and it will just confuse him. He will be up soon. You have to go!”

“Okay, no problem.” I don’t enjoy getting the bum’s rush, but I think I understand. Dressing in a hurry, I realize, “My coat is on your floor by the door, Aria.”

“Shit. Dress faster!”

I nod and I’m dressed faster than I do for work. She dresses too. Good thing I don’t think he knows about sex hair—her curls spray out in all directions. God, I just want to make it worse and make an absolute mess of her hair. What is wrong with me?

Once she’s dressed, she says, “I’m going out there to see if he’s up yet. You wait here.”

“Okay.” I think it’s a little silly to be this covert about things, but I will play this game for her. He’s a kid. He’s not going to be confused about why I’m here. We just tell him we had a grown-up sleepover. Case closed. But she knows him better than I do, so I defer to her judgment on the matter.

She cracks her bedroom door open and waits. There’s no sounds. Then she needlessly tiptoes on her carpeted floors out to the main part of the condo, while I peek out the door. She walks out of my view, and I’m hoping her silly plan works out. If for no other reason than her own comfort level.

Abruptly, she shows up with my coat in her hands and comes back in, closing the door behind herself. “Put it on.”

“It’s hot in here, Aria.”

“You won’t be in here for long. Just do it. In case he sees you. That way, we can tell him you just got here.”

I shrug it on and tease, “It’s like you’ve done this before.”

She rolls her pale blue eyes and smirks. “I grew up with a nosy older sister. Sneaking around is in my DNA.”

“About last night—Aria, I want this. I want him to know who I am, and I want to see how things could be with you and me. I want all of it. Last night, I didn’t just say that stuff to get laid.”

All the worry drains from her face for a breath. “Same here.”

It’s a relief after putting myself out there like that. But deep down, I knew she’d say that. “I’m glad to—"

A sound cuts through the happiness of the moment, and the worry is back on her face. “He’s in the bathroom. You have to go. Now!”

She’s practically shoving me out her bedroom door and toward the front of the condo. I can feel her whisper on the back of my neck. “Go, go, go!” When we get to the door, she opens it as quietly as possible, then pushes me out.

I tease. “No goodbye kiss?” I know I’m pushing, but it’s fun to make her make that face.

She gives me the evil eye, before swearing, “I’ll make it up to you.” Then she carefully shuts the door behind me. Inside, I hear her. “Good morning, honey.” He must have asked what’s going on, because she tells him, “Thought I heard someone at the door. It was a really big raccoon.”

I’m a raccoon? Can’t help but laugh at that.

Closer to the door, he says, “I wanna see it!”

Oh shit, better run!I take off and slip on the sidewalk close to the parking lot, then hide behind some bushes. He pops out and she’s close behind. She advises, “It must have run off.”

“Aw. I wanted to see it. You scared it away.”

“Maybe we can go to the park this weekend to make up for it.”
