The room feels heavy with uncertainty. The scent of fear hangs in the air, mingling with the faint smell of smoke. I can’t shake the feeling of impending danger, a knot in my stomach that refuses to ease.

“Who would want Lena?” he wonders aloud, his voice filled with both confusion and concern. Vlad shakes his head, his brows furrowed.

“I don’t know. When we returned, Lena was terrified. She mentioned something about her family coming for her. Could it be them?”

The questions linger, unanswered, as we both grapple with the unknown. The room feels colder now, the weight of the situation pressing down on us, suffocating our hopes for a safe resolution.

“Let’s get you cleaned up,” he says, his voice filled with urgency, as he looks up at the stern-faced guard. The sound of his command hangs in the air, echoing through the cold stone corridor. “Tell Aldo I need to see him in our quarters,” he instructs, his words carrying a hint of authority.

Gently, he lifts me from the hard, unforgiving floor, his hands strong yet tender. As we make our way down the dimly lit hallway, the faint scent of dampness lingers in the air, mingling with the musty odor of a recent battle. The weight of exhaustion settles upon my body, causing my steps to falter and my eyelids to grow heavy.

“I have to find her,” I whisper, my voice barely audible, as if afraid to disturb the silence. The words escape my lips, filled with a mix of determination and desperation. “I promised her,” I mumble, my voice fading into a whisper, as sleep gradually envelops me once more.

Chapter 55

Aldo

Istandinthecourtyard, my voice carrying over the bustling sounds of men carrying out their tasks. Suddenly, a guard approaches me, his footsteps echoing on the cobblestones.

“Sir Vlad requests your presence in their quarters as soon as you can,” he informs me.

I nod, feeling a knot of apprehension forming in my stomach. What could this be now? These past months have been a whirlwind of chaos, with families uniting and the ensuing war. Yet we’ve regained control and make progress.

“Alright, let him know I’ll be there soon. What’s going on?” I inquire.

The guard shrugs, uncertainty in his eyes. “I’m not sure. But the men are securing the compound and conducting a thorough sweep,” he replies. “Thank you. Carry on, and inform me immediately if you hear anything else,” I instruct him.

“Of course, sir,” he responds dutifully.

This better be damn important. I retrace my steps, entering the grand main house and heading towards Vlad’s quarters.

I knock on the door, and Vlad’s voice beckons me inside. “Come in,” he answers.

I step into the room, the air heavy with the scent of polished wood and aged parchment. “What is it?” I ask, my voice tinged with weariness.

“We have a problem,” Vlad reveals.

“Don’t we always,” I sigh, sinking into a plush chair. I run my hands through my hair, feeling the tension in my scalp.

Who the hell were these intruders, and how did they bypass our sophisticated alarm system? It’s infuriating. They knew our defenses inside out, catching us off guard. If they breached our compound’s security this easily, who knows how far they’ve already infiltrated?

“Yeah, well, we might have an additional problem,” he says, his voice tense. I look at him slowly. “Lena is missing.”

The weight of his words sank in as I stood, a knot forming in my stomach. The room feels suffocating, the air heavy with uncertainty.

“What the fuck do you mean, she is missing?” I ask, my voice trembling with fear. The room feels stifling, the walls closing in on me. I can hear my heartbeat pounding in my ears, the sound echoing in the silence.

“Apparently, the safe room was breached,” he explains, his voice strained. I can see the worry etched on his face, lines of anxiety creasing his forehead. The room feels cold, a chill running down my spine. “She never made it into the safe room and there is no sign of her,” he continues, his words hanging in the air like an ominous cloud. I can feel my legs growing weak, my body trembling with disbelief. The room feels like a trap, closing in on me from all sides.

“What … How?”

“But Rose woke up briefly and said a man grabbed Lena before she passed out again,” he adds, his voice filled with a mixture of anger and helplessness. I can taste the bitterness of fear in my mouth, a metallic tang that lingers. The room feels like a prison, trapping me in a nightmare.

“She said she tried to get to her, but someone put a cloth over her mouth,” he says, his voice filled with anguish. I can imagine the struggle, the desperation in Lena’s eyes. The room feels suffocating, as if the walls are closing in on me, constricting my every breath. “When I found her, she was passed out and left on the floor. She could barely speak before she was out again,” he says, his voice heavy with guilt. I can sense the weight of his words, the burden of not being able to protect her. The room feels like a void, swallowing me whole, and leaving me in darkness.

“Who?” I ask, feeling like a fog of hopelessness has ahold of my sleep-deprived brain.

“I’m not sure, but Rose mentioned it might be Lena’s family,” he says, his voice filled with uncertainty. I can hear the confusion in his tone, the disbelief at the possibility. The room feels like a maze, with no way out, and no answers to be found. “That’s not the worst part,” he continues, his voice trembling. I can feel the tension in the air, the fear thickening. The room feels suffocating as if the walls are closing in on me, pressing against my chest.
