Page 17 of Rescuing Abbey

“Have another episode last night?” Liam handed me a cup of steaming hot liquid.

“What makes you think that?” I mumbled, letting the coffee work its way through my veins.

“I was on my way to check on you when I saw Abbey go into your room. She’s gotten to you, hasn’t she?” He smirked behind his cup. “You like her.”

I grunted. “Why would you even think that?”

“Because you wouldn’t have let her in your bed otherwise.” Liam turned to leave the kitchen. At the doorway, he stopped. “A tip, some insight if you will… next time, let her under the covers. That way, she can feel how much she affects you in the morning.”

I groaned at Liam’s retreating chuckle. That was all I needed. A mental image of waking up with Abbey’s naked body pressed against me. I adjusted my hardening cock.

Fucking Liam. The asshole knew what buttons to push and when.

I needed to shower and calm myself before she woke up, or I was going to be in trouble.

I glanced in my room to see if Abbey was still asleep before going to the guest bathroom. I didn’t want to wake her by showering in my room, but the bed was empty. My stomach twisted at the loss of her in my personal space, of not seeing her in her little tank and underwear again. I groaned. This was not helping.

Shoving that thought away, I stripped out of my sweaty clothes and headed for the bathroom. The cold water did nothing to alleviate my intense need for her. I grunted, fisted my cock, and pulled up images of Abbey in nothing but my t-shirt. The way it hung off her body, exposing her creamy skin, like it wanted me to touch it. I pumped my cock faster, imagining her toned legs wrapped around me as she rode my cock. My cum came in thick ropes as I moaned her name. It had been too long since I’d had a release, let alone one inside a woman, but it would have to do.

When I entered the kitchen, dressed and ready to go to town, Abbey was sitting at the counter, sipping her coffee. She looked up from her phone and smiled.

“Morning.” I poured my second cup.

“Good morning.” She smiled.

The tension in my shoulders released. She wasn’t going to try to talk about last night. “We can go to town this morning and pick up your car. Chase said it was ready to go. He looked over everything, and it should be as good as new.”

“Great. Thank you. I was afraid I ruined it by running out of gas.” She let out a deep sigh.

“Not ruin…” My eyebrows scrunched, and I looked directly into her eyes. “But you need to make sure you don’t do that again. It’ll kill your engine,” I said, a little too sternly, even for my liking. I didn’t want to think about her being stranded anywhere again, and it angered me to think about what might have happened to her if I hadn’t come along.

“Yes, sir,” she said, lowering her gaze. If it was a different situation, her response would have been hot, but not when she said it in defeat. I brushed away the feeling of unease that settled in my stomach. I hadn’t meant for it to sound like I was reprimanding her, but she needed to know the severity of the situation.

“Maybe after, we can see about your phone. There’s a store in town that might be able to help you extend the reception.” She gave me a weak smile. “We can head out when you’re ready.”

“Just give me a few minutes to grab my things.” Abbey tossed the last of her coffee into the sink and rushed to her room. I couldn’t help but sneak a glance at her ass as she dashed down the hall. Her jeans hugged her curves and cupped her cheeks nicely. She was a tiny thing but would still fit nicely in my hands.

Fuck.

I shook my head and chugged the rest of the steaming liquid. I could make it through today without embarrassing myself. Just because she was working her way under my skin didn’t mean anything.

When she reappeared, her bag was slung over her shoulder, and her smile warmed my chest. She seemed to have brushed off my harsh tone from before, but it still seemed like there was more to it than that. Though I wanted to know what it was, I wasn’t going to intrude.

The drive to town was pleasant. She told me about how she went to art school and what kinds of things she liked to draw and paint. I told her a little about growing up in town with Jessie, Gavin, and Travis. She asked about my work, and I went into detail about how I was a part-time sheriff for the town and the rest of my time was at the ranch running security. A lot of people thought I was crazy when they learned what I did, but she didn’t. Abbey seemed more interested in the nuances of my jobs than being turned off by them.

“Let’s reorganize a little. Let’s go to the phone store first, then we can grab some lunch in town and pick your car up on the way out. How does that sound?” I stopped at a red light in town.

“Sounds good to me.” She radiated excitement as she practically bounced in her seat. Her eyes flit from one shop to the next. “This place is so cute. I’d expected the downtown area to be so tiny, tucked in the middle of nowhere, but it seems so much bigger.”

“After a while, it’ll start feeling small and suffocating,” I mumbled. Cottonwood Creek wasn’t for everyone. She glanced my way with her eyebrow arched high, but I shrugged. It wasn’t the time to get into that conversation.

At the cellular store, we ended up getting her a temporary phone since she didn’t want to change the carrier. The new one she got gave her enough coverage so she had service while she was here visiting, and I felt more comfortable knowing she had a working phone at all times. When we got it activated, I put my phone number in it in case she ever needed anything. A pang of sadness hit me knowing she’d have to leave at some point. I didn’t want that.

Our next stop was to the local diner, The Cotton Patch. I hadn’t eaten here since I was in high school. We arrived just as the lunch group was leaving, but there were still a good number of patrons lingering, who all happened to glance up when we entered.

Fuck me. I hated the attention.

“Two for lunch today, Duke?” Shelby, the owner’s wife, called from behind the counter.
