In the morning, Nickolay took her out for breakfast. Alek and Chloe decided not to have her go to their house, wanting to spend the day at home alone together after what happened yesterday. He’d been with Alek when he got the call from Chloe, and he’d seen how he freaked out at the sound of her pain.

He was going to lose it when she actually had the baby.

They didn’t talk about much over breakfast, but he kept catching Alice stealing furtive glances at him. It was almost shy, which was funny, considering what they’d done together last night.

As he signed the receipt, he made an impulsive decision. Smiling at Alice, he hoped that his suggestion wasn’t going to freak her out.

“I have to go pick up Max from my Aunt Gina’s place. Do you want to come meet him?”

Her eyes widened. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I am.”

She gulped but nodded. “Okay, then.”

She didn’t exactly sound enthusiastic, but he’d take it. They drove straight to his aunt’s house, smirking as he saw Alice fiddling with the strap of her seatbelt as if she was nervous.

He’d called his Aunt Gina to let her know to expect them, so Max was already packed and ready to go when they arrived. He was sitting on the couch, playing with his tablet, but when they walked into the house, his head popped up.

“Dad?” he asked, his eyes skimming over to Alice. “Who’s that?”

“Don’t be rude, Max. This is my friend, Alice. Alice, this is my son.”

“Hi,” she said, crossing to the couch and holding out her hand. Max’s face lit up in a smile as he did the very adult thing of shaking her hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“I didn’t know you were seeing anyone,” Aunt Gina said, appearing at Nickolay’s side as Alice sat on the couch beside Max, letting him show her something on his tablet.

He watched them for a moment, something warm blooming in his chest at the sight of his son so easily connecting with this woman that he was starting to have such strong feelings for.

“Yeah,” he said in a low voice. “I think there might really be something here.”

Aunt Gina placed a hand on his arm. “Good for you. It’s about time.”

“Come on, Max,” he called. “It’s time to go.”

“Can we go to the trampoline park?”

Nickolay frowned. “I don’t know about that…”

“Pleeeease, Dad,” he begged.

“Yeah, don’t be a stick in the mud,” Alice added with a teasing grin.

“Are you saying you want to jump on the trampolines?” he asked, pointedly letting his gaze drift down to her chest.

“What if I am?”

“Let’s go,” Max said, hopping off the couch. “It’ll be so much fun!”

“Yeah, it will,” Alcie agreed.

He chuckled. “Well, it looks like I’m outnumbered. Fine, we’ll go.”

Max let out a happy whoop and rushed to the front door before Nickolay reminded him to say a proper goodbye to Aunt Gina and grab his overnight bag.

Alice came to stand beside Nickolay while Max hugged his aunt. “Seems like a pretty good kid you’ve got there.”

“I certainly think so.”
