Her fake boss.

It was starting to become difficult to separate her real life from her pretend existence. She’d heard that this kind of thing could happen when agents went undercover, but it usually took longer than this.

She didn’t have to guess about what was causing her to feel this way. She was in love with Nickolay. She couldn’t deny it to herself any longer. The flutter in her chest every time she saw him could only mean one thing.

She also had to come to terms with the fact that she couldn’t betray him and by extension, she couldn’t betray Alek or anyone in the Bratva. It wasn’t easy to come to this conclusion, but she knew in heart that it was right. When she was lingering outside the office, trying to hear what was going on in the meeting, she realized just how relieved she was that the wooden door muffled most sound. It forced her to acknowledge the fact that she didn’t truly want to do this job any longer.

The question was, what did she do now?

If she didn’t turn over any evidence to Roberts, his investigation would die in a week. But she wouldn’t be undercover any longer. She’d be expected to go back to her real life. No more fake identity. She wouldn’t be working for Alek anymore, she wouldn’t see Nickolay.

Unless she told him the truth.

She had no idea how the hell she was going to do that, but she had to find a way. She’d figure it out tonight, after Max went to bed. She couldn’t stand all the lies any longer.

“What do you think?” Max asked, and she turned her attention away from Nickolay to look at Max. He was holding up a model car he’d been working on for the past half hour. It was halfway done when they sat down, and he’d been working diligently to complete it before dinner was ready. She’d helped him with some of the instructions, but he’d done most of it himself.

“It’s amazing,” she said, and he beamed with pride.

“It’s an El Camino. Dad says they’re bitchin’.”

“Hey, I didn’t say thatyoucould say that,” Nickolay called from the kitchen, using his stern, no-nonsense, Dad voice. But when he met Alice’s eyes, she saw amusement there.

“Sorry, Dad,” Max called out, standing. “Come on, Alice. Let’s add it to the shelf.”

She followed him into the living room, where Nickolay had set up a shelving unit just for the model cars they completed. It was already halfway full, and she watched as Max added it carefully to the line of others on a middle shelf.

“We’re gonna fill this shelf up,” he said. “Maybe you can help with the nex one too.”

If I’m still around.

“We’ll see.”

Reaching out, she brushed back his dark hair out of his eyes. Her affection for Max had only grown over the last week or so. She’d been spending so much time with Nickolay that she’d been around Max a lot too. He was such a sweet kid.

As they returned to the table, he told her all about playing red light/green light at preschool and the grilled cheese he had for lunch. He seemed to love sharing his day with her, which made her laugh at the sour expression on Nickolay’s face when he did it. Apparently, he didn’t tell his dad much at all about what he did at preschool, but she tried to explain to him that it was probably just related to having a new person around to talk to.

Max would lose his enthusiasm over telling her about his day when he truly got used to her being around. Until then, she was going to soak it all up. And of course, she was going to hope that Nickolay kept her around long enough for Max to grow tired of her.

Nickolay finished up dinner and brought their plates to the table. For a novice at making roasted chicken, he did a hell of a job. As they ate, it felt all too real. This domestic, family dinner felt like a place that she belonged.

After they ate, Max begged them to watch a movie with him. The three of them sat on the couch together until Max’s eyelids grew heavy. She waited for Nickolay to tuck him into bed, nervous energy making her fidget and fear causing her to rethink telling him tonight.

She wasn’t worried that he’d hurt her, despite his loyalty to the Bratva. She was worried that he’d never forgive her for deceiving him.

When Nickolay came back into the room, she stood.

“I need to tell you-”

His lips cut her off as he kissed her with a passionate fire that seemed to burn away her fears and doubts. She still had to tell him, she knew that, but as Nickolay pulled her to his bedroom, his mouth still pressed against hers, Alice let herself get lost in him, just for a little while.

NICKOLAY

Alice’s handsroaming his body made his cock throb. He’d been thinking about getting inside of her ever since their brief encounter that afternoon, and now that they were alone, he couldn’t hold himself back. He stripped them both, tossing clothes carelessly onto the bedroom floor. She kicked out of her shoes and let him guide her onto the bed. The room was dark until he turned on a lamp. He wanted to see her.

She was a perfect combination of smooth skin, lean muscles, and feminine curves. Her rosy nipples were hard points, and the curve of her hips led his eye to the dark curls between her legs. Then, because she knew he was checking her out, she stretched her body out, arms resting over her head on the pillow and legs spread with her knees bent. She was on display for him, and he could hardly breathe as he drank in the sight.
