The door opened before he could respond, and Alek walked into the room. He had a rare peaceful smile on his face and it grew wider when he saw that Nickolay was awake.

“Hey, I’m glad to see that you’re awake. The doctor said you’d be fine, but you’ve been out for four hours. You missed the birth of the baby. She’s perfect.”

“Congratulations,” he said. “Where’s Alice? Is she okay?”

He probably could have asked more about the baby, but hearing that he’d been out for so long made him even more concerned about how Alek might have reacted to learning that Alice was an FBI agent.

“She’s a damn hero,” Alek said. “We were all so distracted in the parking lot that the vigilante fucker could have taken us all out. She was the only one that noticed him.”

“Hero? You mean…you’re not mad? I thought you’d be furious, considering that she was undercover in your home.”

“Well, I’m not exactly thrilled, but Chloe is fond of her. Besides, she’s solving a big problem for us.”

“Bigger than the murderous vigilante?”

“She claims that she’s going to take care of the FBI investigation. She’s going to put an end to it.”

Nickolay shoved off Vlad’s hand and sat up again. The dizziness didn’t last very long, but he had a feeling the nauseousness wasn’t going away anytime soon. He;d just have to deal with it.

“What are you doing?” Alek asked.

“I’ve got to go see her. Vlad, you’ll have to drive me.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Vlad said.

“I don’t give a shit. Alek, I need you to keep an eye on Max.” Nickolay stood on unsteady feet. “Someone get me my clothes.”

They all gave him a hard time, but he got his way, and Vlad drove him to Alice’s apartment ten minutes later. As they pulled into the parking lot, he saw her come out of the building with a box in her hands. Getting out of the car, he rushed toward her.

“Alice!” he called, startling her. She jumped, nearly dropping her box.

“Oh my God, what are you doing here? You should be in the hospital.”

He glanced in the bathroom mirror before he left the hospital, so he knew that he looked like hell with a big white bandage wrapped around his head. But he didn’t care. He had more important things to discuss with her.

“Where are you going? Is that a moving box?”

“My undercover operation is over. I need to clear out.” She started to step around him to get to her car, but he moved to block her path. “What are you doing?”

“Come to my place.”

“What?”

He hated the way that she was looking at him right now. The light was gone from her eyes. She looked defeated and sad.

“I want you to come to my place, move in with me. I love you.”

The words came more easily than he would have expected, but they felt right. This time, shediddrop the box. It landed with a dull thud on the sidewalk.

“You…are you sure?”

Nickolay stepped in close, his arms going around her waist. “Yes. One hundred percent, absolutely sure. I’m crazy about you, no matter what your name is.”

“Silvers. It’s Alice Silvers. And I’m so sorry that I lied to you for so long. I love you too. And I love Max.”

“Then, you’ll come to my house?”

She nodded, her chin quivering as tears swam in her eyes. Throwing her arms around his neck, she pressed her lips to his, kissing him as if she never wanted to let him go. And that was fine with him.
