She could end up doing something really dumb, like throwing herself at him. Using her free hand to tweak her nipple, she moved the vibrator in and out, the intense vibrations affecting her clit as she clenched around it.

She imagined Sam looming over her, his brow drawn and his lips in a tight line as he gave her his sole focus. He kept his shirt on last night, but in her mind, he was completely naked. She wanted to run her fingers down his chest and traced the ridges of muscle that made up his abs. Then, she would move lower, gripping his cock and guiding it into her.

Her orgasm came suddenly, the intense explosion of pleasure so unexpected that a whimper escaped her before she could stop it. Her back bowed and her toes curled as she came, Sam’s image in her mind and his masculine scent on the sheets surrounding her.

In the morning, Lexi was awakened by a knock on the bedroom door. She had fallen asleep right after using her vibrator last night, so she was still naked in the bed. When she heard Sam removing the padlock, she clutched the sheets to her chest.

“Don’t come in!” she called out.

“Okaaaaay,” he replied. “Well, the door’s unlocked and I have breakfast out here.”

She let out the breath she was holding as she heard him walk away. Getting out of the bed, she got dressed in a pair of shorts and a T-shirt from the bag of clothing that Sam brought to her yesterday.

When she joined him in the kitchen, he was setting to-go containers on the table. One had pancakes and the other had bacon. She took a seat at the table with an arched eyebrow.

“Take-out again? Don’t you ever cook?”

“I can make a few things, but overall, I’m not great at it. I can get through just fine without starving by ordering food, which is fine by me.”

“I can’t imagine not cooking,” she said as she grabbed a piece of bacon. “I really got into it when I was a teenager. Travis was a shit cook, so I took it upon myself to learn. I figured I could help out by cooking the meals since Travis was so busy with the mafia. I even found my mom’s recipes, written on index cards in a little tin box. I made them all, and it helped me feel closer to her.”

Lexi wasn’t sure why she was opening up to him like this. Maybe she was looking for that connection she felt before all of this went down. Not that she believed it would change anything. Then, he handed her a cup of coffee, and their fingers brushed, making warmth spread through her chest.

“So, what about your mom?” she asked once he sat down and they started eating. “Is she a good cook?”

There was nothing subtle about the way that his shoulders tensed. Lexi saw his grip on his fork tighten and the tick of a muscle in his jaw as he gritted his teeth. He didn’t look up as he answered.

“No, she wasn’t good at much of anything.”

Lexi had clearly stumbled upon a sore subject, and she couldn’t help letting out a frustrated sigh. It seemed that ever since yesterday morning, one or both of them was constantly putting their foot in their mouth, adding to the rising tension between them.

She probably shouldn’t care, but she was done having that argument with herself. Whether it was sensible or not didn’t seem to matter. She had feelings for Sam. Hell, the most upsetting thing about all of this was the wedge that he’d driven between them when he locked her up in here.

“When you say shewasn’tgood at it, do you mean that she’s passed away?”

He gave a one-shouldered shrug. “It’s been awhile since I saw her, but as far as I know, she hasn’t kicked the bucket yet.”

Okay. So, it was something he didn’t want to talk about. She could respect boundaries, but she couldn’t help wondering if this was his way of keeping distance between them. Maybe the fighting and the tension didn’t bother him the way it bothered her. Maybe he didn’t feel anything for her.

She didn’t like to think that the only thing between them was sexual attraction, but she figured she’d find out soon enough. If he was true to his word, he’d let her go tonight.

SAM

It had been a busy day,but as evening approached, he found time to slip away from his regular mafia duties to go to the jail. Nix was being released, all charges against him dropped. The DA came through, just as Sam knew he would.

He’d probably do just about anything to keep his affair a secret.

Sam was waiting on an uncomfortable bench while the paperwork was being processed, and he kept catching the guards looking at him curiously. He ignored them. Instead, his mind went to Lexi.

It was awkward this morning when she asked about his mother. At first, he was glad that she was opening up to him, sharing a piece of herself. It made him think that maybe they could actually get past this ugly business, as unlikely as that seemed before. But as much as he appreciated her openness, he couldn’t give her the same thing. Talking about his family was something that he never did. It wasn’t personal to her. He wouldn’t want to have that discussion withanyone.

Who wanted to think about a traumatic past? It was better to keep that shit buried.

Finally, the door opened and Nix was brought out. The pricks left him cuffed until he reached this room, despite the fact that the charges had been dropped. When the handcuffs were removed, Nix rubbed his wrists and offered Sam a smirk.
