SAM

Sam foundhimself back in Vic’s club a day later. After careful consideration, Alek agreed to the terms, but he wanted a substantial cut of the business.

“Forty percent?” Vic repeated after Sam told him the news. “That’s one ballsy Pakhan you have there, Sam.”

He shrugged. “If the number is too high for you, feel free to explore other options. It won’t offend.”

Vic rubbed his eyes with his thumb and forefinger, sighing. “Fuck. No, I’ll do it.”

Sam grinned. “Good call. We’ll make sure that your lover is safe.”

Vic grimaced. “Lover? No, no, no. Octavia is my sister.”

That’s what I get for making assumptions.

“Oh. So, why do you feel that she needs a security detail? Overprotective?”

Vic chuckles. “Hardly. Octavia has a way about her that seems to piss a lot of people off. She’s also wealthy, so that puts an even bigger target on her back. I just want to make sure that she doesn’t get into any trouble in my city. If I’m honest, she’s already made a few enemies here.”

Sam was glad that Roman offered to provide the protection for her. It sounded like she was a heap of trouble. He finished up his business with Vic and left the club. It had been a good day for business, especially now that he had Nix back to work, and this was his last obligation of the day.

Making his way across the parking lot, he thought of stopping to grab dinner at a drive-thru, then grinned as he remembered Lexi giving him a hard time about getting take out all the time. He’d just reached his car when his cell phone rang. Pulling it out, he glanced at the screen, but it was an unknown number. He answered it.

“Hello?”

“Samhuil? Is that you?”

He froze in place behind the steering wheel before he even put the key in the ignition. The sound of his mother’s voice made bile burn his throat and he could barely form a response.

“I…yeah, it’s me.”

She must have changed her number because he’d blocked both of his parents years ago. He didn’t want to hear from either of them. Tricking him by calling from a new phone number was just another betrayal from her that he could add to the list.

“Oh, thank God,” she said, her voice breaking. “Please, don’t hang up. I have news.”

He wanted to do just that, to hang up and block this number as well, but curiosity got the better of him. What could be so important that she was calling him now, after all this time?

“What is it?” he asked cautiously.

“It’s about your father.”

Of course it is.

“What about him?”

Her breath hitched on a sob. “H-he’s dying.”

“Good.”

The word slipped out easily, but he didn’t regret it.

“Oh, Samhuil, you can’t mean that. He’s your father.”

Sam snorted. “Sure. Now, what do you want from me?”
