“I think you know exactly what it has to do with you,” Calloway sneered, but he stood. “If you’re smart, you’ll turn on this criminal organization before you get dragged down with them.”

He had to be kidding. Did he really think that Sam would turn into a snitch?

Never,

Calloway left without another word, and Sam waited until he saw the agent walk out the door before pulling out his phone and calling Alek. He kept the conversation short, well-aware that he was in public and Calloway could have someone else watching him. Alek ordered him to come to a meeting tomorrow with the other main player in the Bratva. As he hung up, the man he’d been waiting for arrived, and Sam conducted business quickly. He was eager to leave the bar.

When he got back to his apartment building, he headed straight for Lexi’s place. He’d been spending so much time here that he just walked inside, anticipating a delicious meal and an opportunity to move his stress about the FBI to the back of his mind while he focused on Lexi.

He heard her laughter as he closed the apartment door and stepped into the living room. Her couch sat along the wall, and she was sitting there with her legs crossed and her computer sitting on her lap.

“I miss you, you know,” she said as Sam moved closer and got a glimpse of a man on the computer screen. He was smiling at her, and Sam’s stomach tightened.

Who the fuck is this?

“Of course you do,” the man on the screen replied. “Frankly, I don’t know how you’re getting by without me.”

Lexi rolled her eyes and chuckled. She didn’t seem to have noticed Sam’s arrival, and he stood there, feeling like an idiot as he eavesdropped on the conversation, jealousy and anger coursing through him.

“You’ll have to come visit soon,” she said. “I want to show you my new place. And you have to come eat at the restaurant.”

“I’d love that. I need to go now, but I’ll text you tomorrow to check in.”

“Alright. Love you.”

Love you?

Did she really just say that? A rabid monster seemed to come to life inside of his chest, one that wanted to tear this stranger apart.

Sam took a step back, prepared to leave the apartment, but he managed to bump into a table, making just enough noise to draw Lexi’s attention as she was saying her goodbyes.

“Goodnight. Love you,” the man on the screen said before the screen went black.

Lexi’s eyes lit up as she looked at Sam, her smile bright and devastating, considering that she’d just told another man that she loved him.

“I didn’t hear you come in,” she said, closing the computer and setting it aside as she stood.

“Well, of course not. You were in the middle of something,” he snapped.

“Is something wrong?”

“What could be wrong? I’m fine.”

He knew that he sounded ridiculous saying that in such an aggressive tone of voice, but he wasn’t about to admit to her that he was hurt or upset. It wasn’t as if they’d talked about being exclusive. Lexi could do whatever she wanted.Whoevershe wanted.

“Bullshit,” she said, stepping closer. He wanted to move away from her, but he forced himself to stay put. “Talk to me.”

“If you want someone to talk to, why don’t you just call that man back? Who is he anyway?” She opened her mouth to reply, but he kept going. “Nevermind, I don’t need to know. I just didn’t realize that you were sleeping with other men. Do me a favor and let me know when he visits so that I can make myself scarce.”

“Are youjealous?”

The small smile on her face pissed him off more.

“No,” he replied curtly.

“Are you sure about that? Because you’re acting really upset.”

He gritted his teeth and considered just walking out of the apartment. But if he did that, it could ruin everything. As upset as he was, he didn’t want to take that risk.
