He placed a hand on the small of her back as they reached the ground floor. More than one pair of eyes followed them curiously in the lobby of the apartment building but she didn’t seem to care. Rumors were going to fly regardless.

As for him, he was just happy to be with her. He wasn’t used to this sort of thing since he didn’t really do relationships before Lexi. He didn’t have to worry about wooing a woman most of the time. They came to him when he beckoned, like moths to a flame, so eager to jump into his bed. It was walking on the wild side that really appealed to them, not him.

Lexi was a different story. She had depth and real feelings for him.

Still, he had no idea what he was doing. He decided to make the day about her. He felt almost as if he owed her for listening to his story with compassion but not pity. She accepted him, scars and all, and that meant more to him than he had words for. He wasn’t much of a romantic, but he had a feeling that Lexi was the type that preferred action over words anyway.

So, he took her to lunch at a revolving restaurant. It was a trendy place at the top of a hotel with glass walls that allowed for a full view of the surrounding city as the restaurant itself slowly rotated.

“This is amazing!” Lexi said, staring out at the cityscape. “I had no idea that Davinapolis was so beautiful.”

“It has a certain charm,” Sam replied, his eyes focused on her instead of the city.

“What’s that?”

He looked down to where he was pointing and saw the circular brick-paved street that marked the exact center of the city. There was a huge fountain there that was one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

“That’s the memorial fountain. It’s a monument to soldiers lost in World War Two. The statues on the fountain or men from different branches of the military.”

“I’d like to go there sometime.”

“Then, I’ll take you.”

A slight blush covered her cheeks, turning them pink. “You don’t have to. I mean, I'm sure it’d be boring for you, having lived here your whole life.”

He reached across the table and took her hand, giving it a squeeze. “I’ll take you. No arguing.”

She bit her lip through a smile. He liked putting that look on her face. It was so much better than the anger or fear he’d seen before. Not that he liked to think about that.

The food arrived, and the steaks were cooked to perfection. Lexi moaned as took her first bite, making his cock twitch in his pants. It didn’t matter that they had been sleeping together most nights for the past two weeks. He couldn’t get enough of her.

After lunch, he took her shopping. With most women, he’d assume that a trip to a women’s boutique would be the best option, a chance to get some new clothes. But Lexi was different. He paid attention, and she’d been complaining lately about her old pots and pans. She wanted a new set, but the cost of moving to a new city was significant, and she was waiting until she had a few more paychecks in her bank account to buy new ones.

“No way,” Lexi said as he led her into the cookware store, explaining that she could pick any set of cookware she wanted. “I can’t let you do that.”

“Yes, you can. I think we both agree that I have a lot to make up for. This is a start.”

She took a little more convincing, but eventually, her excitement won out, and she dragged around the whole store, looking at every set they had. It was boring for him, but he got something out of watching her face light up when she finally picked what she wanted.

Ten minutes later, he was carrying the heavy box to his car with Lexi at his side, so happy that she was practically bouncing on the balls of her feet.

“I can’t wait to break out this cookware,” she said, pulling him into a hug as soon as he’d placed the box into the trunk. He chuckled.

“I’ve got to admit, I figure that I’ll benefit from this too as your official taste-tester.”

“Oh, so it’s official now, is it?”

“Yeah,” he said, his smile fading as he looked into her blue eyes. A surge of emotion made his throat feel thick, and he cupped her cheek, running his thumb over her soft skin. “It is.”

She pressed her lips against his palm. “So, what do you want to do now?”

“Anything you want.”

“How about we do something you want to do? Tell me, how does Sam Gusev like to spend his free time?”

“Mostly, I enjoy eating with my neighbor and fucking her. Not necessarily in that order.”

She slapped him lightly in the shoulder. “Be serious.”
