“No, you haven’t. But the same can’t be said of your brother, now can it?”

If he thought bringing up Travis would shock or scare her into telling him anything, he was wrong. It just pissed her off.

“Travis has nothing to do with this.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“He doesn’t even live here.”

Agent Calloway flipped open the folder and Lexi saw her brother’s mugshot along with a list of charges that he’d faced the two times that he’d been arrested over the years. He hadn’t done much time overall.

“According to this, he’s suspected to be connected with the Italian mafia in Misso City. His crimes are believed to have been carried out on behalf of the Italian mafia there.”

“Suspected? Believed? It doesn’t sound like anything concrete.”

Agent Calloway frowned. “I don’t think you understand how serious this is. I think your boyfriend is involved in some serious criminal activity.”

“Boyfriend?”

It was probably best to play dumb about everything, but he was prepared for this. Moving Travis’ rap sheet aside, Agent Calloway grabbed a series of pictures. They were all her and Sam together, including the time they walked to the ice cream shop. He’d been surveilling them. That realization made her feel slightly nauseous.

“It looks like you two spend an awful lot of time together. So, tell me, have you picked up on anything about his business?”

For a moment, she struggled to remember what front Sam used. She knew he was listed as the owner of some kind of business…

“You mean the security company?” she asked when she finally recalled what he’d told her. It was hard to keep the smile off her face as Calloway’s eyes narrowed in annoyance.

“Youknowwhat I mean,” he snapped.

Suddenly, he got to his feet and went over to the corner of the room where the camera was. Reaching up, he tugged on a wire at the back of the camera and the red light turned off. Lexi’s heart raced and her palms got sweaty.

Agent Calloway prowled back towards her with anger etched into the lines of his face. He stayed standing, hands flat on the table as he leaned forward, towering over her.

“Do you really expect me to believe that you just happen to be connected totwodifferent men with ties to the mafia? You think I’ll believe for one second that you’re just some innocent woman in all this?”

“I don’t care what you believe,” she snapped, glad that her fear didn’t come through in her voice. She was terrified to be alone in the room with this big, aggressive man. “What matters is what you can prove. I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“Just whoring around with scum,” he sneered.

“I’m leaving,” she said, her own anger overriding the fear. She stood, and Agent Calloway’s muscles tensed. For just a moment, she thought that he might physically restrain her, even though she wasn’t under arrest, but he seemed to realize what a bad idea that would be. The camera might have been off, but if he left a bruise on her body, she’d have evidence against him.

Lexi came around the table, having to pass him along the way. He watched her with his lips pressed into a thin line.

“You know, this is far from over. I’ll keep coming after Sam and all the others until I find someone willing to talk. I’ll bring them all down, and I’ll do whatever is necessary to make sure that you’re caught up in it.”

“I haven’t done anything illegal.”

“I don’t care,” he replied, something close to hatred in his dark eyes. “If you don’t play ball, you’re on my shit list, and that’s not where you want to be.”

She didn’t even consider playing ball. She wouldn’t betray Sam, no matter how much Agent Calloway threatened her.

“Goodbye, Agent Calloway,” she said.

She wrenched open the door of the interrogation room, refusing to allow herself to look back at him as she left. She was committed to acting like she wasn’t concerned about him at all, but as she stepped out of the police station to wait for an Uber to pick her up, her hands were shaking.

* * *

She was still worried the next day when she went to Sam’s apartment. She’d been working extra hours the last couple of days, so they hadn’t seen each other, but they had plans to spend time together today.
