“Don’t worry about her, We’ll make sure that she’s okay until you’re out of here..”

Nix offered him a small grin. “Thanks. And don’t worry, I’ll keep my mouth shut, no matter what.”

Sam just gave him a curt nod. “P (The Pukhan) is sending a lawyer to see you today. He’s trustworthy. I’ll be back to see you soon.”

It was difficult to walk out of the jail, knowing that the guards might decide to rough Nix up again, but it wasn’t as if he had a choice. All he could do for now was make good on his promise to look after Nix’s pregnant girlfriend.

He sent a text to another of his foot soldiers as he left the jail, ordering him to stop by Nix’s house and provide Layla with whatever she needed.

As he arrived home and stepped off the elevator, Sam got his second look at his neighbor. Lexi was standing at her door with three grocery bags hanging off her arms as she dug around inside of her purse. As he walked closer, she pulled out her keys but lost her grip on one of her bags.

Lemons went rolling everywhere, and Sam chuckled as she let out a muttered curse. Bending down, he grabbed one that stopped in front of his own door. Lexi’s head snapped in his direction at the sound, and he watched as surprise flickered across her face, followed by unmistakable desire.

It looked like he wasn’t the only one that felt that spark.

Without a word, he helped her gather up the groceries she dropped. She beamed at him as he got close, and he noticed the faint freckles scattered across her nose and cheekbones. She was also kneeling, shoving other fresh fruits and vegetables into her bag.

“Thanks for the help,” she said. “My refrigerator is practically empty, so I’m trying to get it stocked up.”

“Let me help you.” Sam took the plastic bags from her. They were heavy. “Did you carry these up here yourself?”

Lexi looked around the empty hallway. “Do you see anyone else?”

The laughter that followed kept him from getting too annoyed with her snide question. It was a light and airy sound.

“I’m usually a lot tougher than people think I am,” she added, sticking her key in the door and opening the way into her apartment.

Sam followed her inside, looking around curiously. The apartment had the same layout as his own, which was no surprise. All of the apartments in this building probably had the same design. It opened to the living room. The kitchen was to the right and there was a hallway next to it that would lead back to the two bedrooms. Sam used one of his as a home office.

“You’ve completely unpacked?” he asked as he followed her to the kitchen. There was decor on the walls and no boxes anywhere.

“Yep. I finished last night. I hated the idea of living out of boxes. Now, this place is home.”

“So, you’re the kind of person that moves quickly.”

She nodded. “Sure. When I know what I want, I go for it.”

Her blue eyes locked onto him for a moment, and he felt a blast of arousal at what he saw there.

She wantedhim.

But she turned away before he could make a move, unpacking her groceries. A smirk curved his lips as he took a seat on a cushioned bar stool at the island separating the kitchen from the living room.

She was playing a game, flirting with him to see what would happen. He could go along with that.

“So, what brought you here?” he asked. “Where did you live before?”

“I moved here for a job. I came from Misso City.”

He nodded. He was familiar with it. It was a city on the East Coast that was even bigger than Davinapolis. They’d had a war between rival mafias recently, and things had ugly before it was resolved.

“What job brought you here?” he asked.

It wasn’t just an attempt to make small talk. He was genuinely interested in learning about Lexi. He couldn’t entirely explain why, but when she turned to put something in a cabinet, his eyes roamed down to her ass, and he knew that her looks had something to do with it.

“I’m the new head chef at Salted. It’s a restaurant downtown.”

“I’ve heard of it. It’s supposed to be one of the best places to get seafood in the city. I have to admit, I’m impressed.”
