My eyes meet Kael’s in a flash. “If you keep asking me inappropriate questions like that, then I’m going to report you. Do you understand me?”

“Oral, giving or receiving? Discuss.”

Is he kidding me right now? This guy is seriously unbelievable. I’ve never met anyone as vulgar as Kael Jenkins before and I’ve definitely never met anyone as conceited. Is he honestly that used to women just throwing themselves at him? A few dirty words, a wink, and a hint at that boyish smile, and they’re instantly under his spell. Is that what happens?

On second thought, maybe that’s exactly what happens.

Yeah, well… not this time, buddy.

“I mean it, Kael. If you don’t knock it off I will not hesitate to drag your ass into Dr. Copeland’s office and have you thrown out of this place. You need to start taking this seriously.”

Kael laughs softly, and then he holds up his hands in surrender. “So judgy, Jonesy. That’s not a very becoming trait. You should probably work on that. Can I go now?”

He stands, but my glare intensifies by about a million.

He sits. He sits quickly.

Punk-ass rock stars and their inflated egos.

But what choice do I have? I’m going to have to let his question slide if I want to move forward with things, otherwise our hour will be up, and just like yesterday, and the day before that, we’ll have achieved exactly squat.

And for the record,receiving,because… hello.

I lean forward, keeping my eyes locked with his. “When did drinking become a problem for you?”

“It’s always been a problem. Once I got a taste for it, I just couldn’t stop. Alcohol got me through some pretty tough times.”

“You were just a child, though. Where were your parents?”

“They fought a lot when I was a kid. For as long as I can remember they were too busy to worry about what I was doing.” He cracks his neck from side to side. His expression is serious, bordering on intense, and then he leans in slightly, lowering his voice. “I remember this one day they were fighting real badly, so I took a six-pack of my old man’s homebrew from out of the back shed, and I hid under the house with it. I drank three whole bottles before I even realized I’d done it.”

“What were they arguing about?”

“My dad was screaming bloody murder about how my mom never had dinner ready on time and how she was useless in the sack.”

“He sounds delightful.”

“Oh, yeah, he was a real treat, Jonesy. He told me once that’s why he never married her. Because the hooker on the corner of Forty-Ninth Street gave better head than she did. Now there’s something every kid needs to hear about their mom. Or their dad for that matter. I went searching for that hooker a few days later. I just wanted to see what she looked like. I didn’t even know whatheadwas exactly, but I wanted to see what the woman who did it better than my mom looked like.”

“Did you find her?”

“Yeah, she told me to drop my pants or piss off.”

I feel my brows descend. “She said that to a kid?”

He lifts one shoulder with a small smirk. “It’s a classy neighborhood. What can I say?”

“Your parents weren’t married?”

He shakes his head. “As far I know, they’d only been dating a few weeks when my mom found out she was pregnant with me. I guess they just never got around to tying the knot.”

“What happened after you drank your father’s beer?”

“I passed out under the house. He found me a few hours later puking my guts up. I couldn’t walk straight for a week after that.”

“He hit you?”

Raising an eyebrow, he scoffs. “Nah, he didn’t just hit me, Jonesy. He beat the living shit out of me.” Kael’s eyes close tightly the instant the words pass through his lips.“Fuck,”he grumbles under his breath.
