“It doesn’t matter. You don’t focus on anything. You shifted from economics to finance as your major, and then you left New York at the drop of a hat and came to Mumbai. You refuse to move in with me, even though we have space in this house, and now when you were doing so well at Mehta Finance, you left that as well. You even refuse to work in the family business when it’s your legacy too.”

Her sister’s words stung. Yes, she had shifted her major in college when she’d realized she loved finance more than economics, but she’d kept economics as a subject. She hadn’t quit it.

“Great!” Jiya tossed her hands in the air. “So now you think I’m fickle and flighty. And that I’ve turned my back on the family business.”

“Those are your words, not mine.”

Anger poured through Jiya, but she calmed herself. “Look, Raashi, I love you. You’re my sister, and I know you’ve struggled for the longest to provide for me, and I appreciate it; I really do, but you need to allow me to do what I want. I will make mistakes, and you have to let me make them. Also, I’ve told you over and over again that I don’t have what it takes for the restaurant business. You do. Why can’t you understand that?”

“I quite hate it when you turn this around on me,” Raashi raged. “I simply can’t stand it.”

“Then sit down. No one’s asking you to stand,” Jiya retorted, getting ticked off again.

Raashi looked like she was going to burst a vein, but Jiya was tired of being pushed around.

A chuckle escaped from someone. It was Shauna. Jiya spun around and found Shauna covering her mouth with her hand.

Rhea elbowed her. Nirvaan and Janak both glared at Shauna.

“What?” Shauna said. “I can’t help that this is amusing.”

Jiya faced her sister, who was smoldering with resentment.

Raashi took an agitated step forward. “Just because we have money doesn’t give you the right to behave immaturely. At one time, we had very little of it, and I hate that you take it for granted now.”

Jiya looked heavenward. “Money? Are we going there now?”

“We’re already there. Have you even thought of what you’re going to do next? Do you have a plan?” Raashi shook her head. “No, why would you? You’re behaving like a child and doing things as per your whims and fancies only because you freaking can and have the money and means to.”

“I can’t believe you said that.”

“Saying it as I see it!” Raashi said, looking angrier. “Why does it even matter to you what I say? It’s not like you care either way.”

“I care too much. You, however, don’t care that I care.”

“Sure,” Raashi grumbled.

All along, on the long flight back home, she’d oscillated between accepting Rohan’s proposal and rejecting it without even applying. Yes, he was the first man she’d truly been so attracted to, and yes, his job offer sounded very tempting. But the truth was that if she actually considered it, then it would put her on the warpath with her sister. However, now she realized that no matter what she did, Raashi would always think less of her and her choices.

She and her sister were already at war. Might as well fire the grenade now and set everything on fire.

“Actually, I do have a plan. I already have an offer,” Jiya said smugly.

Raashi squinted. “Oh really? From who?”

“Fortuna Finance has offered me the position of Financial Manager on their team. I’d be reporting to the CFO and to the owner directly.”

It took a second for Raashi to make the connection.

“No fucking way,” Raashi exploded. “Tell me you said no.”

Shauna raised her hand. “Uh, why would she say no to Rithwik?”

Janak leaned forward, linking his hands together. “Because it’s not Rithwik who’s offered Jiya a job. Fortuna Finance belongs to Rohan.”

“He’s right,” Nirvaan concurred.

“No fucking way,” Shauna repeated. She exchanged a glance with Rhea, and they both smirked, looking a whole lot more intrigued and entertained.
