She gave him a grateful smile and sipped from it.

“Are you better?” he asked her a few seconds later, still crouching in front of her.

She exhaled. “My lower back hurts, but it’s getting better.”

“May I take a look?”

“I’m sure it’s nothing. Like I said, I’m not good with pain.”

“Jiya, I want to see. You could be injured.”

Hearing the finality in his voice, she shrugged out of her jacket and turned, lifting her shirt up a bit for him to check.

His eyes widened. A dark bruise had already formed at one side of her lower back, spreading below into the waistband of her trousers. Fuck. She was hurt.

She sat back when he rose. He went to his attached bathroom and pulled out the first aid box from a cabinet.

On his return, he handed her a painkiller tablet to swallow, which she did.

“Turn around,” he ordered, crouching in front of her again.

“What?”

He squeezed some ointment onto his fingers. “Do you have anyone else who can apply this for you?”

“Uh, no.”

“Then I suppose it will have to be me.”

“But…”

“Jiya, please. I don’t have all day.”

She stared at him for a second before giving him her back. Again, she lifted the shirt up. He lowered a corner of her trousers, and she sucked in a sharp breath. He heard it. He also noticed her shiver when his fingers rubbed against her skin. Clearly, she wasn’t immune to him either. His lips began to curve. Bloody hell. Why was he thrilled by that? He really shouldn’t be.

Yet his fingers lingered on her soft skin for a few seconds longer. The smell of the pain reliever filled the air around them, drowning out Jiya’s scent completely. He hated it. Cursing himself for thinking like that, he rose to go to his bathroom to wash his hands. When he returned, Jiya had already worn her jacket and was waiting for him.

There was a knock on the door, and Akash entered again, carrying a transparent paper cup filled with…wait… Orange juice?

Her eyes met Akash’s, and her jaw dropped.

“Hi, Jee Jee,” Akash offered her the glass, “I hope this makes you feel better.”

Jiya blinked, staring at Akash for a whole second before leaping out of her seat and launching herself at him.

“Oh my God, Akash!” Jiya said, kissing both his cheeks. Then she punched his shoulder.

“What was that for?” Akash grumbled before handing the glass of juice to her.

She took a large sip and smiled. “Thank you. You remembered how my juices help me feel better.”

Akash nodded.

“What are you doing here?” Jiya questioned. “I just texted you last week, and you didn’t even think to inform me that you are in India? Why has Keya not mentioned it, either? I’m so mad at you. And now I find you here.”

Akash held her by the arms. “I’m actually interning with Rohan since the past two months on Janak’s insistence. I have six months left to finish my internship here. And you know, I’m absolutely horrible at texting.”

“You’re absolutely horrible at communicating. Are you sure you ought to be in the media business? Communication does happen to be a basic requirement there.”
