Pleasure filled her. Rohan was actually taking her advice. It was thrilling and motivating.

“Alright,” Paras Modi said, “I’ll ensure we’ll do the needful.”

Rohan nodded. “Now, moving on…”

Rohan listed out the order in which he wanted the next batch of investments to be done. Another fifteen minutes later, he said. “Let’s adjourn for now. I want this presentation shared on the central server for everyone to access, and Paras, please assign the team their tasks. I want to see results from everyone.”

Everyone began to file out. Akash walked out with another colleague, and soon the room was empty except for Rohan and her. He was busy with his phone, his fingers playing with his lower lip, when she approached him. Excitement washed over her. She was finally alone with the man who had taken permanent residence in her thoughts, and considering the heated stares he’d been sending her the whole afternoon, she allowed herself to hope that, perhaps, she’d also been on his mind.

She approached him. “Hey.”

He lifted his head and looked at her, his expression blank, giving away nothing.

She handed him a sheet. “I’ve been working on the task you assigned me. This is a list of all the charities Fortuna has supported since your late father’s time that are still active. The ones highlighted in green are those that are currently supported by your adopted parents, Tara and Varun. I still have to verify each of them individually. I’ll talk to the accounts department and see what information they have on each.”

Rohan glanced through the list, rubbing his lower lip. “Cancel all the charities that my birth parents supported. Leave the rest.”

Her eyes widened. “You want to cancel them?”

“That’s what I said.” His tone was cold. She didn’t understand it.

“Alright then. I’ll get going on this.”

She studied him, racking her brain to say something that would make him stay a little longer with her. But she came up blank.

“Is there anything else, Miss Deewan?”

She frowned. “We are alone right now. Why are you behaving so formally?”

A cold mask dropped on his face, one she disliked instantly. He stared at her, not replying.

“You weren’t like this before,” she continued.

“Like what?”

“So cold and formal. What’s changed?”

“You weren’t working for me before. Now you are. And since I am your boss, I don’t see any reason for our relationship to be anything but formal, isn’t it?”

Confusion and disappointment warred inside her. Why had he been watching her in that deep way of his if he wanted to be so formal with her? He was sending her all sorts of mixed signals, and she didn’t know what to think or believe anymore. Perhaps it was all her imagination. Here she’d been thinking of him since days, but he clearly didn’t care about her at all. And now, she looked like an idiot in front of him.

“Absolutely,” she replied.

“Glad we could clear that. Is there anything else you need?”

She lowered her chin. “I wanted to thank you for accepting my suggestion today.”

He stood, pocketing his cellphone.

“Don’t think much of it,” he said curtly. “It was a valid suggestion. I would have supported anyone who had brought it up. It wasn’t intended to make you feel special. Now if you don’t mind, I have to be someplace else.”

A wave of hurt washed over her.

He stared at her for a second before he turned and left, completely dismissing her.

His harsh words stung, dashing all the hopes she had of him and her ever becoming something more. The only good thing was that she now knew exactly where she stood with him. Perhaps that was for the best, indeed. She began to walk out the door when she realized she had forgotten something behind.

She pivoted and saw her cup of watermelon juice lying unfinished on the table. She quickly returned inside to grab it. She took a small sip, relishing its fresh, sweet taste. While most people drank tea or coffee to get by their days, she was one of the rare few who didn’t need a caffeine high. Her juices helped soothe her, and so she drank different ones daily, twice a day.
