“You can talk to me, you know,” Akash pressed forth. “I won’t judge, I promise.”

She shut her eyes with a heavy sigh. Her lips began moving even before she opened her eyes, and she poured her heart out to him.

Akash held her hand. “Hey! It’s okay. He’s far too complex a person, but you already knew that. I’m sure you guys will figure things out.”

She wiped a stray tear from her cheek. “I’m so mad and hurt by him.”

“Talk to him, then.”

“For that, he needs to be back in town.”

“He’s back,” Akash said softly. “He returned last night and was to be in the office this morning.”

“How do you know?” Jiya asked, her stomach roiling with annoyance.

“Uh, we have a meeting with a client in an hour. He called to tell me. You could…”

She didn’t even hear the rest of what Akash was telling her. She stood and made her way up to the executive floor. She barged inside Rohan’s office, not waiting to be announced by his PA. The woman looked annoyed and flustered, but Jiya couldn’t care less. Rohan was back, and she had to meet him at once.

His eyes heated for a fraction of a second as he saw her. But then, he blinked, and his entire countenance changed to stiff and cold.

“I’m sorry.” His assistant pointed at Jiya. “She just wouldn’t listen to me.”

“No problem,” Rohan replied. “I’ll talk to Miss Deewan.”

The PA retreated and shut the door behind her.

Jiya turned her angry gaze on him. She stormed toward him and slammed her hands on his table. “How dare you treat me this way?”

He leaned back in his chair, his face devoid of any expression. “What way is that?”

“Really? Do you want me to spell it out?”

“Yes, Miss Deewan. Please do. Perhaps, then we can get over your temper tantrum and return to work.”

His words only fueled her rage. How dare he call her rightful anger a temper tantrum? She took his paperweight and flung it at him. He ducked, and it hit the wall behind him, smashing into a hundred different shards.

He looked at the mess and then at her. “Are you done?”

“Not in the least. I told you once before that you better not mock me. Try that derisive tone again with me, and I will hit you or throw something else at you.”

He stood. “What do you want from me?”

“What I want is for you to stop being a jerk and talk to me. You disappear on me without a word, and then you treat me as if I don’t matter to you at all, when I know I do. And then you’re out with Kanika in Singapore. I warned you about that. I told you I never wanted to see you with her. And yet—”

“I told you not to fall in love with me. And yet…”

She rocked back. “Are you mad? How does this comparison even make sense?”

His silence aggravated her anger.

“Are you punishing me for falling in love with you? Is that why you disappeared? Is that why you were withher?”

“You and I are not together, Jiya. I already made that clear to you. Hence, what I do in my private life is none of your business.”

Her eyes widened. Her chest hurt, listening to the utter nonchalance in his tone.

“And I don’t accept that,” she soldiered on. “Something happened that night because of which you pushed me away. We were happy before that. I know it.”
