“It is time. Are you ready?” I purred against her ear.

A shiver ran through her. “Yes. Take me.”

“I won’t forget your gift, Calla.” I traced the curve of her jaw, my cock rigid against her belly.

Sliding to my knees, I pushed her skirts up to bare soft curls and glistening pink folds. The scent of her arousal flooded my senses, sharp and tangy and mouthwatering.

With a growl, I dove in.

Calla cried out, fingers twisting in my hair. I lapped at her cunt, savoring her flavor as the energy flowed into me. Not enough to sate, but enough to ease the gnawing ache.

“Please,” she gasped, trembling against me. “I need—”

I rose, spinning her around to brace her hands on a tree. My cock found her entrance, sliding in with a single thrust.

She screamed her pleasure. I groaned, burying myself to the hilt as bliss and renewed vitality seared through my veins.

Tonight, I would fuck. Not as a predator, but as a desperate man, soothing his need.

Tomorrow, I would march with my allies, taking back the country and freeing the Hidden Princess, the future queen, my mate.

Chapter eleven

BETH

Theicesheetsonthe walls and across the door exploded with a crack like gunfire. I yelped in fright and rolled into a ball as shards flew through the air. Than cursed and covered me with his massive body.

When there were no more knife-like bits of ice hitting the wall, he pushed himself off me. The missiles had left their marks on him, tearing a jagged cut across his cheekbone, and another on his leg. Muttering under his breath, he wiped the blood off his face.

“Let me have a look,” I said, struggling to get up because my legs were shaking so much. But Than was hurt, and that was more important than my fright. Both cuts were superficial and would probably heal without any scarring. He’d been lucky.

A cold drop of water hit my neck, and I shuddered as I wiped it away.

“The ice is melting. Have you noticed how much warmer it is?”

Than was right—the air no longer cut into my lungs with each breath. He looked up as more drops fell, drenching us slowly but inevitably.

Was this a new torture Prys had devised? If the temperature dropped again, our wet clothes would freeze solid.

Than pulled me against his bulk. He tightened his hold until I could barely breathe, and then he kissed me. I moaned into his mouth, and when he let go off me, I stumbled and would have fallen if he hadn’t held me up.

“Look,” he said. “The frost spell is gone.”

Instead of the crust of ice, droplets of water glistened on the cold stone walls. The purple lightning zipping around the dungeon had stopped. We stared at each other as understanding dawned.

“This is our chance.” Than strode to the locked door and peered through the barred window. Then he grabbed hold of the metal and gave it an experimental shake. It didn’t budge.

“I could have told you,” I said. “I tried that. They’re solid. No way can we get past the door.”

Than closed his eyes and lowered his head. I knew how he felt. There was no way out. But his posture didn’t mean surrender. He rubbed his forehead, scanning either side of the door as if he considered breaking the rock around the hinges or the lock.

But even as strong as he was, how did he think he’d break through with his bare hands? I bit my lip to stop myself from screaming in frustration. The cell shrunk around me until I thought I’d explode with the need to get out of here. My breaths came in short gasps until Than grabbed my arms roughly.

“Stop,” he commanded. “You losing it is not going to help.”

I stared into his worried eyes, my chest loosening as he kept talking to me. When I felt better, I smiled, even though my lips trembled. “Okay.”

He nodded and hugged me briefly before stepping back. His expression shifted as he turned toward the corner to the left of the door. “This is weird. Something… There’s something over there. I can feel it calling to me.”
